Product Description

Product Description

What is Prana? Prana is cosmic energy, the dynamism of life. According to yogis it is present in the air, in our food, in our water, in our sunlight. It has no chemical or physical form, but it is our true nourishment, for without prana there can be no life. Not only does this energy exist, but it can be stored in the nervous system and through yoga the current of prana can be directed at will. The science of controlling prana is called pranayama (ayama to curb or master). To interpret pranayama as breathing exercises would be severely limiting the scope of the exercises and their true purpose. In this book André van Lysebeth describes the laws and techniques which are necessary for collecting, storing and conscious control of pranic energies within the body. Pranayama is an excellent practical handbook on the yoga of breathing. This art, or science, is little known in the West, but, with discipline anyone can use it to gain great energy and calm in situations of stress.

By M. J. Robinson TOP 500 REVIEWER
This is the best book I have read on Pranayama to-date. Before doing any pranayama practice I advise anyone to read this book thoroughly and several times then find a competent yoga teacher who is aware of the benefits (and pitfalls) of pranayama to guide you wisely through the practices. (Recommend this classic along with Andre Van Lysebeth's book 'Yoga Self-Taught'.) Van Lysebeth was aware of the deeper dimension of yoga and through his clear explanations of pranayama practices he has conveyed very clearly how this ancient 5000+ year old practice could benefit the sincere person to 'yoke' the individual to the divine within to recover his/her true nature. Excellent and practical.

An absolute classic. If you are keen on yoga, this needs to be part of your book collection. This book has been out of print for some time so it is very good to see it back in print. I suggest purchasing it pronto before it goes out of print again. Not sure that many people are likely to buy it. It is all a matter of demand.

P.S. I also seriously recommend that you use a Neti Pot to keep the nostrils clean if you are practising pranayama regularly. Practising jala neti also enhances the practice of pranayama as your nostrils become very sensitive and allows certain pressure points in the nose to be activated more quickly.

After a good preparation a step by step instructions for exercises with clear assessment what is for the beginner and what is not yet. If you want to gain only understanding what is the pranayama you can use this book. Very fun and interesting text written with good style.
