A request for an electrical adaptor results in a maid appearing with an ironing board; every official Christoffer meets commiserates with him at great length about his loss, despite the fact that he hadn''t spoken to his estranged father in years and still harbours intense feelings of resentment towards him. As they move from one nightmarish, bureaucratic misadventure to the next, it becomes increasingly clear that the pair has their own baggage. Its best described as a drama/black comedy. The characters of Mikkelsen and his wife arrive in Prague to recover the body of his recently deceased father, a man he has not seen in 25 years. Matters are complicated further as the couple's marriage is at breaking point and about to seperate whilst he soon discovers the life his father led all these years during his absence. Whilst mainly a drama, there are a few sprinklings of dark humour (placing an order in the hotel restaurant and recovering the body in the morgue)which help to elevate the mood. There are more elements to the film which i will not spoil but this is a moving and powerful human drama which deserves 5 out of 5. Whilst a bit pricy, I found this a joy to behold. Whilst the majority of the film is in danish, there are a few scenes in english too. Enjoy this fantastic movie.

This movie starts out slowly, but it's worth the wait. Very little dialogue happens between the two leads initially, leaving you to read the body language and interpret the facial expressions. It's amazing how much both actors (Mads Mikkelsen especially) manage to say without speaking. I should imagine that watching it a second time from the beginning, knowing what you do, would be even more telling.
There are several moments of understated humour in what is otherwise an incredibly moving bittersweet movie. I would not hesitate to recommend this film, and suspect anyone who is in/has been in a long-term relationship will recognise immediately aspects of their own behaviour in how the couple act over the course of the few days. Truly believable, brutally honest, and sometimes uncomfortable viewing.
