I manage a Youth football team (U18's) and am an FA Level 1 coach. I am always looking for new ideas to develop the lads but don't have a lot of spare time because of my job. Sitting on flights and in airports, reading is a good way for me to keep abreast of new techniques and experiences. This book analyses the training sessions of top teams and coaches and is a "must buy" for devotees of the game. It is easy to read, well set out and covers key points in an easy to understand format. Lessons are clearly spelled out and illustate that even the top teams concentrate on basic techniques. I particularly liked the encouragement to develop your own individual drills from basic concepts. Great value for money and an enjoyable reference text.

As an Academy Coach, the principles in this book, especially from the UK and European based coaches, provided additional training drills and ssd game progressions. This book would benefit coaches of good standard youth teams as a certain level of player understanding is needed.

I don't normally review items on Amazon but I bought this book over a year ago and I'm still using it today. I'm a FA Level 2 coach and hold a NSCAA National Diploma, I coach three teams (U9 Girls, U11 Boys, U12 Girls) and I also coach on a recreational level children from 3-7 years old, I have coached teams 18+ as well.

I'm always trying to pick up tips and steal ideas to improve my coaching and get the best from my teams, so as a result I went through a phase of buying various literature. A lot of the books I bought were of no help to me, their drills were unimaginative, incredibly basic and had no basis to form a coaching session around. I went through all the `101 drills' books and ended up throwing them away, although I wanted practises for youth teams I did want to challenge them and push myself as well.

I stumbled across this book by accident but as soon as I picked it up and read a chapter I was excited, the book is a compilation of observations of `Training Sessions of the World's Top Teams and Coaches' and as such the drills were from professional coaches. Now people will ask whether the sessions are age appropriate coming from high level teams? Can I myself use EVERY drill in the book for my U9-12 teams, no, but there are loads of drills in the book that can translate directly to my training sessions and almost all of the book will make the transition with a small bit of simplifying. With a minimal amount of football/soccer experience this book will be a fantastic weapon in your coaching arsenal.

As a side note if you do enjoy this book there is another publication: Training Sessions From Around the World by Mike. Saif (Dec 2003). This is set out in the same format but obviously different drills.
