A workbook to help you master Spanish tenses

Some things just take a lot of practice to learn, and verb tenses are one of them! Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses goes beyond the scope of many other books that deal with verbs. Typical verb books often present little more than charts of conjugations with perhaps some mechanical exercises that do little to help you really master when and why a particular verb tense should be used.

Spanish Verb Tenses fills this void by offering clear, concise, and at times, humorous explanations that pinpoint why a certain tense works in a given situation. The hundreds of varied exercises offer the added plus of allowing for lots of practice.

The book is divided into three main parts: Part I deals exclusively with the present tense-including the conjugation of regular verbs, formation of questions, essential differences between ser and estar, use of the personal a, reflexive verbs, and the present progressive mood.
Part II covers the other six tenses of the indicative mood: preterite, imperfect, future, conditional, present perfect, and past perfect.
Part III presents the imperative and the subjunctive, as well as the future perfect, conditional perfect, and the passive voice.

Two appendices complete the text-one lists verb conjugations, and the other highlights certain verbs and their corresponding prepositions. There are also two bilingual glossaries that define vocabulary introduced in the exercises.

As a companion to a basic text, as a review workbook, or as a reference source, Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses is an indispensable tool for all those who want to practice and perfect their use of Spanish verbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 12 Jan 2006
By "ags15"
Format:Paperback
This is a workbook with which you can master the spanish verbs which are the 'skeleton' of the language. I worked through it having never done any spanish. It is clear and concise and also quite entertaining. So much better to do on the train than a crossword or sudoku! The language is broken down and carefully explained. I also recommend her book of pronouns and preposistions (the red one). I think they'd work well used together actually.

5.0 out of 5 stars If only this woman had taught at my school 19 Nov 2002
By Liz
Format:Paperback
As someone who often decides to do things on a whim, I have a plethora of language teaching books, tapes, CDs and CD-roms littering my house, covering everything from Mongolian to Mandarin. With most of them I'd do two units and then got disheartened or bored or both, and because there was little chance to practise I found that if I left it more than a week I'd forgotten everything.

But this book made it a genuine joy to learn Spanish. I couldn't wait to get home from work every night to do another chapter. You get to write all over it which really forces you to concentrate and helps you remember. The author has a real gift for simplicity. She introduces everything so gently that it would almost be patronising if it were not so charming. It may be called a verb practise book, but other vocabulary is slyly slipped in along the way so that without noticing it you've suddenly acquired the ability to write a whole story!

I was able to read whole chunks of the paper in Peru thanks to the [money] I invested in this book. I could not recommend it more highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supercharge your spanish 20 Jun 2004

Practice makes perfect is an excellent learning resource for students of spanish at any level, and this along with the companion pronoun and preposition book are amongst the most useful spanish books you can find, i would highly recommend the purchase of both.
The books are workbook style, and are very well constructed, each chapter deals with an idividual area, introducing each new idea clearly and concisely and then an excericise to prcatice the new knowledge, quite often there are some interesting little features of the excercises which really help to emphasise the point.
The book serves well as an accompaniment to a course or as a stand alone teaching guide, and is very clear especially as regards the grammar, the voice of an experinced teacher shines through. it is possible to approach this book from start to finish, although it is also possible to pick out individual chapters as needed.
This book feels very complete, and is one of the most complete guides to the mechanics underlying the spanish language.
