Product Description

Product Description

The Practice of Making Strategy takes the student through the process of making strategy with a management team. This is a highly practical book based on a wealth of organizational applications in large and small organizations, public and not-for-profit as well as commercial settings. It presents techniques that can be used to develop a business model, and manage key strategic issues. The techniques are used to develop strategies for units, departments and operating companies, as well as for a complete organization.

For those teaching strategic management the book provides links to the major texts in the strategy field, and includes ancillary materials to guide student learning. The material making up this book has been used successfully with new practitioners - consultants, and practising managers. Many managers use the material to guide the development of a strategy for their own group within a larger corporation.

The book reflects powerful theories from the fields of strategic management, social psychology, psychology, operational research, and organizational behaviour that are brought together in Eden and Ackermann's Making Strategy: the Journey of Strategic Management (1998, 2nd Edition forthcoming). The Practice of Making Strategy extends this material into a step-by-step process with examples and real cases. The book includes chapters on: how to get started with a management team; surfacing and structuring strategic issues; developing a goals system; working with patterns of distinctive competencies; developing and testing the business model; achieving closure.

This book will be set reading for MBA students, to be used alongside the main textbooks in strategy courses. It will also fit perfectly with managers wanting to do their own strategy making, and with consultants working in this field.

A web site to accompany the book can be visited at www.journeymaking.net

5.0 out of 5 stars The Practice of Making Strategy, 2 Dec 2004
By Duncan Shaw (Aston Business School, UK.) - See all my reviews
Just as its title suggests, this book helps the reader to build strategy for their organization in a series of easy to understand steps. The approach advocated in this book can be used either alone, or in teams. For individuals working alone, the approach should help them to think through the important concepts and understand how to approach strategic thinking. For teams, the approach involves cross-functional teams working together to build a strategy which they want to implement and which will have the right effect on the organization. The book talks about identifying the real goals of the organization and provides a 'step-by-step' process to develop action plans to ensure that these are met. After reading this book managers should be more effective in their own strategic thinking - and be able to help their team/colleagues to think more strategically.

This book is an invaluable source for MBA students - and it combines well the another book by Eden and Ackermann "Making Strategy", which is a more detailed account of the theory behind the approach they advocate. Practicing managers who are struggling to identify direction for their project/ department/ organization will also benefit from reading this book. For managers this is an easy to understand, practical guidebook for how to develop strategy which will make a difference in the organization. Lastly, the approach advocated in this book actually works (!) - as I know from having used it to help numerous managers/teams in strategic planning.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for making strategy!, 19 Nov 2004
A great companion to any strategy textbook, the authors lucidly show us how to develop, analyse and implement strategy with a series of direct, concrete and easy-to-follow steps. The methods and processes included in The Practice of Making Strategy are clearly explained and nicely complemented with relevant examples, interesting cases, and practical 'do-it-yourself' exercises. The authors have produced a book which will no doubt become an extremely valuable source to MBA students as well as managers, consultants and academics working in the private, public and non-for-profit sectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for books like this, 16 Nov 2004
This book does exactly what it says on the cover. It is a most helpful step by step guide to the practise of making strategy. Theory and Practise are dealt with in a most helpful way. It is clear, lucid with plently of examples. Whether teaching this subject or using it in strategy or change consultancy, it is imbued with much learning, experience and common sense. The steps not only make sense but also ensue that those engaged in the process feel that the process was just. The references to other works is very helpul and insightful. This is an excellent companion to 'Making Strategy' and 'Visual Thinking'. It is also a key piece of kit for the Strategy and Change Management 'lecturer', 'practitioner' and 'consultant' alike.
