This book on Spanish grammar is very useful. I wish I had it when I was studying Spanish in high school or college. It discusses so many nitty-gritty things that Spanish students struggle with.

When I first got it, I was under the impression that it would explain the past tenses, the subjunctive, etc. It's advanced Spanish grammar, right? When I read the table of contents, I was pleasently surprised to see that it discusses much more valuable information than just that. The following is its table of contents:

1. Object Pronouns and omission of subject pronouns
2. Some/any and other determiners
3. Adjectives
4. Adverbs
5. Commands & requests
6. Modal constructions
7. Impersonal sentences & the passive
8. Relative pronouns & conjunctions
9. Reported speech
10. Problematic prepositions I
11. Problematic prepositions II
12. Idiomatic constructions

Every chapter has very detailed information, along with exercises. My favorite chapters are the two that deal with prepostions. Prepositions are tricky in any language, and Spanish is no exception.

Having said all this, this book is not for absolute beginners. It's better suited to intermediate or advanced students. I majored in Spanish in college and find this book helpful. If I ever tutor students, I will probably refer to this text. So many of my students ask me questions that I don't always have the answer to. I simply "know without knowing." Now I can refer to this book when I need to.

Like the other "Practice Makes Perfect" books in the series, this is a really helpful book. I started off with D. Richmond's verb tenses/pronouns + prepositions books, stopped studying for a while, used Nissenburg's "Complete Spanish Grammar" 6 months later to remind myself of everything, then moved onto this book.

One thing to note is that this one is different from the others that I've mentioned - it is physically much smaller and lighter, and doesn't have anything like as many exercises as the others. Actually, that works out quite well for me - it means I can take it when I go travelling.

The content is superb, I encountered several "ah-ha" moments even in the first chapter.

I feel the grammar and its drills should have been interwoven more closely. In the wonderful Dorothy Richmond and Gilda Nissenberg titles in this series (also the excellent Schaum books) we are gradually introduced to complex themes, always building with plenty of worked examples and questions. In this book we are delivered a barrage of loosely related grammar for many pages, only then followed by a series of drills relating to the whole previous section. There are no references to sub-section numbers or pages in the exercises (unlike the Routledge modern grammar practical guides, where the workbook is a well-referenced, separate entity), so it is left to the avid reader to pen them in themselves.

I am an A level teacher. As a teacher I bought this book for my lessons and after two weeks using it, I feel I need to write down this review. I guess this book will be great for over motivated university students but for an A level grup is not the adequate book. Over complicated and very dense, it is extremely difficult to read. Over ten pages of explanations until you can actually do an exercise. It is very frustrating! It would have been easier if explanations and exercises would have been together but not, my students have to read and comprehend over ten pages of grammar to actually practice it and do the exercise. In spite of being a good book, the way this book is designed it makes it almost impossible to teach I am afraid.

this book is good, i have quite a few practide makes perfect and they are invaluable for students, lots of practice work, although i use an a4 writing pad instead to log the answers to the exercises, that way you can use the book over and over again.
The price of these books are superb also.

Very useful if, as a Spanish teacher, wants to bring your students to the next level. Perhaps more pictures would make it more enjoyable and I always ask for more exercises and less explanations to be honest.
Overall, I like it and so do my advanced Spanish students.
