4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for what it is., 19 Mar 2001
By A Customer
This book is a practice of German grammar, nothing more nothing less. Between its bright yellow pages there lies a brief explaination of practically every German grammar rule of any practical importance, with exceptions of rules being highlighted.

This brief explaination is followed by a page of practice sentences which illustrate clearly the point of grammar being explained. This makes it invaluable not just for students learning german, but especially for people living in Germany an looking for examples of how a rule can be applied to everyday speech..

I spent one year as a student in North Germany, and after discovering this book after about two months, I would not go to Germany again without it.

A splendid book

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Grammar Book, 18 Jan 2006
By A Customer
I have an extensive collection of German grammar books and have to say that this is the best - it has a fairly old fashioned approach i.e. there are no fancy pictures etc but what it does have is a clear concise description of a fact and then exercises on it. I've found it more "friendly" than Hammer grammar, which although it is the most authorative work on the subject it does tend to list that many exceptions that you get bogged down in the detail. A Practice Grammar is not the cheapest option available but it is cheaper than buying a whole pile of more useless books. If it's not available in the UK Amazon Germany usually have them in stock.

1.0 out of 5 stars German grammar made much more confusing than it really is!, 12 Jan 2009
By Mark Smith (Southampton, UK) - See all my reviews

I find it surprising that this book has received such good reviews, as for me it is very badly put together. While it does contain a huge range of topics, the explanations are much over-complicated. Read their explanation for a rule you know well - and it'll take you 10 minutes to understand what they've written and to work out that it really is the rule you learnt in your first ever German lesson. Read a rule for something new, and you stand almost no chance.

There are also really silly problems like bad type-setting (tables which are word-wrapped badly, for example, making them hard to read) and confusing formatting which make examples unnecessarily hard to understand "at a glance". Of course you can get there with work, but it would be so much better to have it clearly presented.
