Worth Having,

This review is from: Practical Wire Antennas: v. 2 (Paperback)
You can never have too many aerial hand books, an the only problem I ever found with this book and similar ones is that it is not detailed enough for the beginner, I would love to have had better explanations of building techniques and why aerials are made the way they are. I bought this when I held my first amateur license, and it is only making sense now that I have passed my advanced exam.

A great book for those who want to make wire antennas,
This review is from: Practical Wire Antennas: v. 2 (Paperback)
If you are looking for a book that tells you what you need to know, and gives a good balance of technical case notes and practical examples, with useful information for the DIY antenna builder - this is it! I bought this when I first got my foundation license, with a view to making a fan dipole. After reading the book I decided not to do it, but it was invaluable in helping me find information that I have now used in my own creations. Lots of good information, and hints and tricks too, with practical exmamples that are written in a way that make sense! It probably lacks a bit on the technical side, but it's weakness is also its plus point. Because it's so easy to read, one can use it as reference and make informed decisions without trudging through endless internet pages or badly written articles. There is a lot of useful data in this book, and I'd highly recommend it. I think someone at advanced level would find this too basic, although there are still good nuggets of information and some interesting twists on old classics. For someone at foundation or intermediate who wants to look at stealth or wire antennas - this is a real bonus. With the knowledge in this book alone, one could set up an effective antenna farm in the loft or garden for next to nothing, that performs well - and doesn't need expensive automatic ATU's, rotators or magic wands. If you just want to extend your antenna theory, this is still a worthwhile book. The author clearly knows his subjest well, and has gauged the audience correctly.
