It offers guidance on lesson planning and invaluable information on teachinf techiniques. It covers all basic laerning language skills and is a source of fresh ideas on classroom management. THis is a standard text for all aspiring and experienced teachers. Though expensive it is well worth the price.

I'm reading this book in the run-up to doing a CELTA course next month, but have taught quite a bit before so am not completely new to TEFL - this is on the course reading list. So far I've found this book really easy and quick to read and recommend it as a starting point. I borrowed it from the library and the only thing that is stopping me from buying a shelf copy is that it was published in 1985 and although I think that 95% of what I've read in it is sensible and relevant to a modern classroom, it would be even more excellent if this was updated so that I could be sure that all the teaching methods suggested in it are also up-to-date. I know for example how OHPs have been replaced by PowerPoint in a lot of classrooms nowadays so can read past the sections on 'machinery', but I'm not so sure that 'choral pronunciation' is still an up-to-date technique and will be checking up on this in my course.
All-in-all though, the best introductory book I've found so far and definitely worth a read.
