Book Description

16 May 2012 1430241764 978-1430241768

Practical SharePoint 2010 Information Architecture is a guide and tool set for planning and documenting the scope, navigational taxonomy, document taxonomy, metadata, page layouts and workflows for a successful SharePoint 2010 project. If you have been tasked with delivering an intranet for collaboration, document management or as a corporate portal, your only chance for success is to get all of these elements right, and then to make sure that you and your stakeholders are all on the same page.

SharePoint 2010 can be dangerous to your career: Expectations are often set very high, and not enough time is invested in understanding how those expectations can be met. Many SharePoint 2010 projects fail to meet their initial goals. Practical SharePoint 2010 Information Architecture arms you with proven tools that will help you to ensure that there is an agreement on the goals and scope, and how to then efficiently design your taxonomies. With author Ruven Gotz' work (with contributions from Michal Pisarek and Sarah Haase) at your side, You will learn how to educate your users on what metadata is and why it is important so you can build SharePoint 2010 solutions that exceed the expectations of your users.

This book:

  • Gives you practical approaches that have been proven in the field
  • Explains how to use visual mind mapping tools and diagramming tools that provide clarity to all stakeholders
  • Gives you techniques on how to teach and motivate your users for adoption and success

What you’ll learn

  • Understand metadata and how to explain it to your stakeholders
  • Plan and run requirements gathering workshops
  • Apply mind mapping techniques for designing navigation
  • Run taxonomy workshops that result in practical information architecture
  • Map process workflows and practical approaches for real-world implementation
  • Build practical and lightweight governance and adoption plans

5.0 out of 5 stars A wealth of information 18 May 2013

A really good read with some good structural ideas about how to run meetings and all sorts additional stuff you never expected to be doing in the world of SharePoint, from dialogue mapping to wire frames. Well worth the effort and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid 21 Sep 2012

This is a must-have for SharePoint Architects to assess their current path to arriving at SharePoint IA versus Ruven's common sense humanistic approach. An enjoyable book that you can read end to end or just dip into chapters when you need some help. It has helped me improve my approach to SharePoint IA whilst being comforted that there was much in common too. A great book, full of techniques, tools and tips that you can integrate into your own style easily.

The author has done a great job distilling the topic down to easy to understand chapters. SharePoint is a very complex platform and Ruven obviously has a wealth of real-world experience. I really enjoy the business problem perspective that the author brings to the book. A very pragmatic approach to very complex projects!! A must read for anyone undertaking a SharePoint project!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for any SharePoint Architect or Consultant 4 Jun 2012
By Robert_S - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The biggest failure for any SharePoint implementation is the failure in Information Architecture. Ruven nails it on the head with this book. It is an absolute must read for anyone trying to implement SharePoint! I've been preaching about IA for years now and this book has justified everything that I keep saying. Thank you Ruven for writing this.

5.0 out of 5 stars MVB - Most Valuable Book 20 Nov 2012
By Björn Stenberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've been consulting around SharePoint for the last 5 years and this is the single most valuable book I've come across; and, I've read plenty. It centers around the hardest part of a successful SharePoint project: namely that we loftily call Information Architecture. I like to explain it as mapping how you and your organization think and work to the functionality of the toolbox called SharePoint. Besides describing the problems at hand the author gives us lots of practical examples of how he has worked. I love the hands-on approach to these soft problems. I have been recommending this book to colleagues and customers for a while and will continue to do so.
