Great book on the Qabalah,
By
This review is from: Practical Qabalah Magick: Working the Magick of the Practical Qabalah and the Tree of Life in the Western Mystery Tradition (Paperback)
I'd highly recommend this book to old hands and new hands alike. Its clear from the book the author has gone beyond the standard qabalistical references to actually reference some Rabbinic sources for material. The book contains an interesting comparison table between attributations of the paths of the tree and the hebrew letters and sources. And indeed the book lives up to its title including some practical pathworking/meditation sections notably - the temple of each sphere and visualisation with the magical images of the spheres, something that most modern other books tend to overlook. There are some interesting sphere correspondance tables in the back containing a large section on fitting the pagan gods into the spheres. Whilst you may or may not totally agree with the attributations, certainly it is a comprehensive work. I was particularly impressed how the author split the Celtic pantheons into Welsh, Irish and British Celtic deities. This was most refreshing as most modern authors tend to mix and match Celtic pantheons ad lib. I think this demonstrates the attention to detail and scholarship which has clearly been put into this work which runs throughout the book - including references to manuscripts in the British musuem and hebrew sources.
The book also contains excellent sections on the qabalistically derived angels and their supposed appearance to the eyes of a seer which is interesting and very useful to the practical magician interested in evoking these beings - giving a point of reference for the working magician. Included are good sections on the use of words of power. There are however many good practical meditations included in the book which would keep the practical seeker busy for hours. My only possibly negative comment is what the book does not tell the new comer is how would I use these many tables of correspondances to write a qabalistical ritual? which I might have expected in a practical book - Or how might I implement a qabalistical formulae, for example as a ritual or meditation etc in the practical sense. Perhaps its too obvious ! Another comment is the book does not mention at all the existence of the qlippoth and tends for focus more upon angelic lore, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The QBL is a vast subject, so I cant really quibble about anything not included in this book. This book isn't the ultimate reference book, but it is a gem of a book, containing more than average information on the qbl. All in all, it would be a superb purchase for any interested in this subject. It is modern and refreshing. Highly recommended.

Inspiring,
By Emily Carding "Sidhe-Ra" (Cornwall, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Practical Qabalah Magick: Working the Magick of the Practical Qabalah and the Tree of Life in the Western Mystery Tradition (Paperback)
I think when I look back over my life in the future, I may well list this as one of my most influential books. It is indeed a practical guide, written in an accessible way, like a teacher holding open a door, or should I say a series of doors ready to step through.
Just from the first read-through, my head was filled with inspirations, images and concepts that finally made true and perfect sense. Since then I have referred back to it many times, and I know I will continue to do so. Even though I have walked a winding magical path for some years, I feel still that I am hovering on a threshold, having glimpsed visions of what lies through the door. As I journey onwards, this and the other Avalonia books from the practical magick series are sure to be trusted companions.

The Best Book on the Qabalah for Years,
By
This review is from: Practical Qabalah Magick: Working the Magick of the Practical Qabalah and the Tree of Life in the Western Mystery Tradition (Paperback)
I was intending to write a beginner's introduction to Qabalah and the ritual esotericism of the West to complement my books on advanced Qabalah. Most of the books on the subject published in the last twenty years seem either 'dumbed down' or simply parrot the format of Dion Fortune's classic 'Mystical Qabalah'. After picking up this volume I knew instantly that the book I would have loved to have written was here in my hands - better than I could have written it. David Rankine and Sorita de Este have produced a beautifully literate and erudite text on practical Qabalah that succeeds in uniting previously ignored sources and yet at the same time is evidently innovative and pertinent to contemporary students. Those expecting yet another re-presentation of 100 year old observations upon the Qabalah fostered upon the tradition by students of the Golden Dawn will be surprised by the attention to detail of the authors. Again, those who consider Crowley's (now) seventy year old teachings and observations as 'modern' will be forced to reconsider their perspective upon what is fast becoming a new era of Qabalah enlightenment. This is ideal for the newcomer to Qabalistic lore and ritual practise, but may be consulted with great advantage by those who are more advanced upon the path - if only for its innovative and thoughtful reconsideration of many associations and correspondences associatied with the Sephiroth and paths.
