Product Description

From student reviews of the previous edition:

'This is a very comprehensive paediatrics textbook. It serves well as a general paeds book for your rotation and will sit on your shelf as a reference book past graduation.'

'This is a really comprehensive book. It has everything you could want to know. It is well written, easy to understand and has lovely illustrations. There are highlighted tables which I liked and the Practical Points boxes are really informative.'

From published reviews of the current edition:

'A great starter manual as an introduction to paediatrics. The format is user friendly and the practical points and clinical examples help readers solidify their learning.' Doody Enterprises, Inc.

'Practical Paediatrics is one of the core paediatric text books for medical students and postgraduate students studying for Diploma of Child Health. .There are Clinical Example boxes scattered within chapters that help keep the information clinically relevant, and the Practical Points boxes neatly summarise the chapter or section information.. There is also a chapter on Indigenous Culture and Health which includes a section on Maori View of Child Health and Illness. One of the best features is the online access which has the full text plus additional features. The additional features include questions in both review format, helpful for revision, and also questions in multi-choice test format with a timer-again a very useful feature for anyone sitting paediatric or child health examinations. There is also a drug database and an image library. This is very good value for money. Overall, this is an excellent textbook that is very relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate students studying paediatrics and child health.'

Maud Meates-Dennis, Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics, University of Otago, Christchurch

The first thing to note about this textbook was it was written for students in Australia and New Zealand, which means that although there are some very interesting sections on jelly stings, spider bites, indigenous culture and health, they are not particularly relevant to students studying in the UK.
Having said this, the book is very detailed and in my opinion has more than enough information for undergraduate medicine. It covers all the major areas, first with an introductory chapter on how to examine that system, what signs you are looking for, relevant investigations and treatments. It then goes onto describe in detail the conditions that affect that system.
My only criticism of the book is that there is a lot of text, which is mainly divided into paragraphs. The book also only uses one colour, which I found meant that some of the diagrams weren't as clear as other paediatric textbooks I've used. I think this is particularly important in chapters such as the cardiovascular chapter where you are looking at heart defects, a picture is much easier to understand than words.
The online resources are good, there are question banks on each chapter true or false to test yourself on. The only problem is they don't give feedback on the questions you just find out if you've got the question right or wrong.
Overall I thought this was a really useful textbook, but it probably wouldn't be my first choice for a paediatric textbook for a UK medical degree.

This is a great textbook that's written in a style that makes it easy to read. It is more detailed than the alternatives such as The Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics and as such it depends on your learning style as to which book you'd prefer. As the title suggests the book is written in a very practical way, giving good advice that can be applied in clinics and the GP surgery, providing answers throughout the text to questions you're often asked by parents by clearly dispelling `old wives tales' in the text.
The text is well divided with subtitles and clear illustrations although I agree with previous comments that a bit more colour would be nice. The book is edited by two Australians and as such has several chapters that you wouldn't find in a UK book such as envenomation and special considerations in the indigenous population, these make for an interesting if not all that relevant read!
Overall a good book, a little detailed for my liking but I found the dispelling of myths particularly useful.

Having used the previous edition of this textbook in the past when I began my first paediatric rotation at medical school, I was quite 'excited' to see that a new edition of this textbook was being released. I have found this textbook really useful for reading if you really want to get your head around an area of paediatrics. This book is useful as it provides the detail that other textbooks sometimes lack yet it doesn't bog you down with too much detail or being too technical.

This book most certainly achieves what it has set out to in that it does bridge the gap. I would recommend to any student to use this textbook if you are new to Paediatrics and want a book that will give you some detail. At my medical school, the 'Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics' is the most popular and the highly recommended book by the staff. I feel though that this book is worth using alongside the illustrated textbook as it provides more detail in places where you need it and best of all, there are exam style questions that you can do through the online website.

As such I would advise to any medical student to first get yourself a copy of the 'Illustrated Textbook of Paediatrics' ILLS TXTBK OF PAEDIATRICS 4E: With STUDENTCONSULT Online Access to use as one of your main sources of information and then use this book alongside it. I do not wish to comment on the value for money of this book as I received a free copy of it from Elsevier however I would say that if you were to purchase the book you would have the added advantage of being able to use the online questions.
