Book Description

21 May 2008 1846311314 978-1846311314
The Isle of Man is undergoing a Manx Gaelic revival. The number of Manx speakers has gone up tenfold in the last twenty years. The government-sponsored Manx Heritage Foundation (Undinys Eiraght Vannin) and the Manx Gaelic Advisory Council (Coonceil ny Gaelgey) regulate and standardise the official use of Manx and have combined to commission this definitive guide to the language: Practical Manx. The book covers the grammar, spelling and pronunciation of Manx Gaelic, rendered accessible to readers of all levels of competence. An accompanying website with voice recordings provides a unique opportunity to observe intonation patterns and other features.

Review

This beautifully written new grammar of the manx language is of considerable benefit to all interested in our national history. --Honourable Noel Cringle, MLC, President of Tynwald

This important book is certain to be appreciated and used by teachers and students. Those of us who may be fluent and literate in related Celtic languages, such as Scottish Gaelic and Irish...will soon regard this book as an indispensable vade mecum. --Professor Donald Meek, University of Edinburgh

5.0 out of 5 stars Manx on the March 22 Nov 2008
A very good book. Easy to follow and understand. Covers most of the required ground for a good working knowledge of Manx. Great to compare Manx to its sister languages, Irish and Scottish Gaelic.

It is marvellous to see the return of these three Celtic Languages in light of the mass media's bottomless talent for excess and bad taste.

Manx was treated as a connection with a backward way of life, as indeed, were all the Celtic Language. They deserve thoroughly their renaissance.
None of the Celtic countries should be ashamed of their rich and proud
histories.

A very useful and practical handbook for the Cinderella of the Celtic languages. Manx Gaelic has enjoyed a fantastic revival in recent years, with the development of its own Gaelic medium primary school, adoption by government bodies and growing acceptance and recognition by the Island's population.

This book is an essential handbook for all those interested not only in Manx Gaelic, but also in minority languages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Practical Manx 24 May 2009
An excellent book for the student of Manx. You couldn't learn Manx from the start with it, so don't think it's a "Teach Yourself Manx", but it really explains all the fine points of grammar with examples from the Bible, from extracts of written Manx and from native speakers. It's a fine reference book.

My only criticisms would be an overuse of technical grammar terms (although there is a good glossary you do have to keep looking up what's a copola or a gerund), and a slight bewildering order (pronunciation comes at the end, nouns are somewhere in the middle way after the finer points of lenition).

The accompanying website sound clips are a very useful resource. Very good value for a reference aid.
