A Practical Introduction to Digital Command Control for Railway Modellers

Being new to digital command control I needed a book that would give me the basic know how to get up and running without the need to do a PhD in computer programming and electronics. This book more than met this need. Clearly written and with minimal technical jargon, Nigel Burkin takes you through the fundamentals of DCC, how to wire up a layout and how to install decoders into locomotives and other rolling stock. For the more adventurous and those with a more detailed understanding, there are also chapters on adding sound and layout programming. Easy to understand, this book helped me get my layout running in no time. DCC no longer seems an alien concept and is not nearly as complicated as some people make out. Definitely worth buying if you're new to DCC.

Brilliant! Nigel Burkin makes an apparently abstruse subject achievable for all - even me! I model U.S. railroads and I have good books by American writers, but Nigel speaks thoroughly and at length regarding just about all you need to know to get DCC up and running here in England. I don't really think I need to say much more about it. If you can only buy one book on DCC, buy this one - it's excellent!

I'm reading through this comprehensive guide, loadsa pics which helps enormously. We met Nigel at a recent model railway exhibition in Cupar, Fife at his trade stand and he is a top man, very helpful, great manner and smile which helps a lot and encouraged my wife to ask questions too an answered all her girly inquiries!

Doesn't go far enough
Excellent book as far as it goes and I will be referring to it frequently but more about programming decoders would have been nice. Very good practical guides on fitting decoders.

Not what I expected
I was disappointed by this book. I found the text to be repetitive and the author's efforts to simplify the components of DCC in the first chapter just left me scratching my head. Read more
