If you are starting a cold (or temperate water) aquarium then this the book for you. Most people will think cold water=gold fish=easy and they will be wrong. Basics of aquarium (water chemistry, fish biology) plus two possible aquarium designs and the most common cold water aquarium fish available are included in this book. Really all you need if you are a beginner (or if you want to refresh your memory) is in there. The author, Nick Fletcher is a former PFK editor, now specialized in Koi and he knows his stuff inside out. In short, if you want to start a GF aquarium (not a criminal bowl) buy this book, read it from start to finish and you will be ready.... you might even want to keep other types of cold water fish.

handy for beginners 25 Feb 2006
I bought this after I had completed my first cold water aquarium and wanted some good reference guides to help me tend to my new fish.

As an introduction this book is great, it's layout is very user friendly, well illustrated and importantly it avoids being overly technical. There are many good ideas contained within the book for creating a nice, asthetically pleasing environment for your new fish.

This book will not tell you everything you need to know about caring for your fish however, is an extremelly good starting point and an especially good purchace should you be considering beginning an aquarium.

Good for beginners 5 Feb 2009
By Izzy
This book is beginners, no doubt about it but I gave it a 4 star rather than a 5 because it only talks about setting up tanks that do not come with a filter built in, and tanks that are super big.

I bought a 25L tank with all the necessary features built in but wanted some extra info for starting up an aquarium and the best fish to buy. I felt the book didn't really cater for what I was after and is limited to information on fish. Since, however, I have ordered the Tankmaster book which has info on coldwater fishes.

This book is perfect if you are starting a large aquarium from scratch, but definitely get additional books on types of fish.
