Product Description

Product Description

The first edition of 'Practical Greenkeeping' was produced in 1997 to fill a huge void in practical knowledge in a format that could be easily understood at all levels. Jim Arthur's experience, advising more than 550 golf clubs in Britain and Europe and acting as consultant agronomist to the Championship Committee of the R&A, made him the ideal man for the job. His no-nonsense, down-to-earth approach conveys his message loudly and clearly. Golf courses can flourish by following traditional methods that are the most simple and most effective, both in terms of condition and cost. This second edition contains a large amount of new material in the form of appendices to chapters, bringing the debate right up to the minute in terms of new regulations on pesticides and fertilisers and restrictions on the use of water. Now, more than ever, the sound traditional advice in 'Practical Greenkeeping' is vital to all those involved in the preparation of golf courses. New generations of student and trainee greenkeepers will find the content of this book invaluable and it will also stimulate much debate and provide encouragement for experienced course managers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must in every serious greenkeepers library, 8 Oct 2003
By Alex (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Practical Greenkeeping (Hardcover)
Jim Arthur has never admitted to knowing it all but he always knew a man who did. This book and in particulary the second edition are essential reading and a highly useful reference for greenkeeper and student alike. Jim has never pulled any punches and the second edition covers his thoughts on many of the 'new fads' within the industry. I cannot reccommend this book enough and would say dismiss it at your peril! Jim is the sole but strong voice advocating traditional greenkeeping and traditional golf courses in the UK. Long may that voice be heard!!

This is as good as it gets .Not only is this the definitive textbook for greenkeeping it is a valuable historical record of the development of the art and science.Full of anecdotes on the characters and pioneers of course layout and maintenance it is a very good read.Every greens committee should have a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars I know what I like to play on but do not know how to get it., 14 May 2009
By David B. Robinson (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have like many golfers have absolutley no knowledge of the art of green keeping but can complain with the best of them. Having heard another weeked of complaints about the state of our greens I thought that I had better find out something about the subject. This book made for the most informative and easiest reading I have ever encountered on any subject matter. I quickly grasped the well written messages, which are repeated as well placed reminders, throughout the book. If only Green Committes at many Clubs would take the time to read this absorbing book.
Buy this read it and sound like an expert when discussing your own course!
