Very basic,
By Bob Harvey (Lincolnshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Practical Garden Railways (Hardcover)
Good and useful information about track laying.
The method of building and rolling stock construction is ideosyncratic, and produces a cartoony sort of model. Author has got a huge amount of pleasure from his railway, but the techniques and results above the track are a bit left-field.

Peter Jones Practical Garden Raiways,
This review is from: Practical Garden Railways (Hardcover)
I bought this book on the strength of having his Guide To Making Locos For The Garden Gauges (not the exact title) and occasional articles in the Railway Modeller over many years. I agree with those who say his work is a little eccentric but it is this fact that attracts me to his work. His approach to the suject of garden railways is not the clinical or the boring but imaginative and accessable. I have begun to design my own locos and started the long process of building these as a result of reading through his books. The actual railway will have to wait for a few years! His advice is extremely practical and can be copied and learned very quickly. This means that one can quickly adapt these ideas into personalised projects knowing that the end result will work out. He is clear about issues like safety and ensuring that certain elements of good practise are adhered to. He busts a lot of myth and mystery about model engineering and garden railway construction and imbues every facet of the subject with enthusiasm bordering on romanticism. I really do like the vast majority of his ideas and anything I don't like are easily accepted as personal artistic preference. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in garden railways as a fantastic read - although I would have appreciated a bit more information on minimum track curve radii and gradient profiles which this book lacks. However, there are other sources for this kind of information depending on one's chosen gauge/scale. Excellant value and well worth buying.

If you are serious about constructing a model railway in your garden then you have to buy this book. Informative in every respect with loads of coloured photos. it covers everything from track laying to modelling trackside buildings. Highly recommended.
