I just got into furniture design and bought a few books at the same time. This is by far the best. It is concise and to-the-point, with well illustrated designs and strategies that make it a joy to read!

The author uses cleverly simple instructions with easy to read diagrams. For example, the section on Frame Building discusses three different ways to build a frame, the pros and cons of each method, and a diagram showing the various stages of construction of each frame.

He also talks the reader through the basic principles of design, which instilled enough confidence in me to design my own bookcase and dresser!

Anyone who is interested in learning the basic principles of furniture construction and design (particularly tables, cabinets, bookcases and chairs) should definitely start with this book above all others!

A very good book! 7 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a really excellent book, and the first I've ever seen where the joints made have been subjected to really high stress tests. This gives a really good guide as to what kinds of joints can be used in different builds, so their suitability is well researched.

A good, clean, well presented book, well written, clear and concise.

I use mine to assist people with learning needs to learn woodwork, and they all look through this book readily. They are not able to understand the written word, however are very inspired by pictures they look at and its surprising what information they assimilate!

the authors in this book have tested out various construction methods for different types of furniture to demonstrate (semi-scientifically) which is the strongest joint. they do make it clear however that it is not necessarily the best one to use for all projects. the only downside to this book is that the measurements are shown in inches and feet rather than the metric system, but nevertheless the information you need is in this book.
