Book Description

19 Dec 2005 0240807383 978-0240807386 2
Written for the beginner, Practical DV Filmmaking guides you thorough the process of making a film with low-cost digital equipment: from development through to production, post-production and distribution. While the technical tools you need are fully explained, the book concentrates on filmmaking principles throughout, illustrating how these tools can be used to achieve stylistic approaches for innovative filmmaking.

The book assumes no background knowledge in either technology or filmmaking and is divided into four key areas:
*DEVELOPMENT: turn your idea into a workable script, storyboard and schedule.
*PRODUCTION: develop skills to shoot original short films and turn a zero-to-low budget to your advantage.
*POST-PRODUCTION: learn basic editing techniques to enhance your original idea using iMovie, Premiere and other popular tools.
*DISTRIBUTION: set up a website and use the internet to promote your film. Includes numerous links to useful websites. Plus, top tips for how to enter a film festival and a new chapter on developing a career.

Projects enable you to master each step of the process taking you through different aspects of filmmaking today. Gradually you will find out where your strengths lie and how to make the most of them. The book also encourages stylistic development by intruding theoretical approaches to filmmaking. A glossary of terms plus an appendix of resources make this guide a one-stop essential handbook to DV filmmaking practice for beginners and student filmmakers.

Product Description

Review

"...A very useful book that....features extensive technical information, but is concerned with aesthetics as well. - American Cinematographer 'Practical DV Filmmaking will be of interest to many people I feel but especially those who find themselves asking questions like; Where do I start?; Whats a storyboard?; What is DV?; How does the Camcorder work; and what sort of movie can I put together? Practical DV Filmmaking does an excellent job of answering these questions and maybe a couple of thousand others (I kid you not).' - Des Owen, Creative Cow --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty impressive first book 3 Feb 2004
Format:Paperback
Got this book recently from Amazon and was impressed from the start. It guides the reader through all the major aspects of DV production with plenty of project examples to get stuck into.
Only downside is that the technology reviewed in the booked is already out of date, which I suppose is always the way with this kind of thing, and also I would have rated the Sony PD150 as a camera worth having if your budget can stretch that far. Apart from that, the basic principals behind the film making process outlined in the book are the same regardless of what technology is employed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let this book be your DV-bible 3 Nov 2004
Format:Paperback
I have been making small documentary projects for a few years now, and eventually came to the point where I realised that learning by doing only gets you so far. This book has become my constant companion. It contains useful info for the beginning film maker who wants to get better and learn about technology as well as film style. The author includes lots of references to websites for more reading, projects to get you out of the armchair and behind the camera, tips on how to move forward and get out of a rut...

All in all I can highly recommend this book to anyone who lives too far from film school or can't afford courses. This book really gets you hyped up to make films.

There are so many books to choose from on the subject of DV filmmaking that it can a complete nighmare for new filmmakers.

Practical DV filmmaking is perfect for amateur filmmakers working on producing their own work with low or no budget.

The author is clearly experienced in presenting information in an engaging and informative manner, you learn something new everytime either by flicking through the pages or focussing on one specific chapter. Each section is complemented by real life examples, pictures and mini-projects to help the amateur acquire sufficient know-how.

I am very impressed with the simplicity of the language and practical advice. Information is presenting in a logical format from creating the story, pre-production, shooting the movie, post-production and getting your movie seen.

The aim of the book and to explain how to make your amateur movie feel like a professional production and it does just that.

I have been working on our movie [...] and the book is always by side.

Get it, you will not regret it.
