Chapter 1 of this book unwrap the general idea of CakePHP, presenting as much as necessary environment information to bring new CakePHP programmers up to date on everything they need to know, and then fills this representation out with facts on how CakePHP development works. The authors prepare the reader for CakePHP language rules, by covering CakePHP ideology and convention.

Chapter 2 is where the show begins. It's a very complete digest of what you can expect in a framework like CakePHP - the treatment of blogging which is available as the tutorial offered by the official CakePHP website. I think every new CakePHP programmer ought to read this chapter after rumbling with the features of CakePHP in the previous chapter. The only inadequacy of Chapter 2 is that it is intended for newbies.

Chapters 3 could be completed better, but scripting a full e-commerce application as a chapter in a book is a tricky task because a lot of functionalities will definitely be assumed - as it is the case with this chapter. However, it is gratifying for creating a mini-shopping application. I hope to see more on this topic in the next edition of the Practical CakePHP Projects book.

Practical CakePHP Project follows in the footsteps of many other successful technical manuals of the past by focusing on learning real situations rather than being a "reference manual".

For developers starting out with new technologies or frameworks, its almost essential to have a good selection of both types of material available, and what John and Kai have provided is a well written and easily to follow step-by-step guide of some of the more common tasks that many young developers will be looking at achieving with a new framework (even if just for testing).

As it doesn't have much in the way of reference material, existing CakePHP developers would find little use for it, but for those trying out Cake for the first time, it provides a good selection of situations and easy to follow instructions that would make a very good addition to their reading list.

This book is poorly written and littered with mistakes and omissions. Trying to follow the examples is a hugely frustrating experience and almost makes you hate CakePHP rather than love it. The examples are written in such a way that you need to complete a whole chapter before the code will actually work (nobody develops like this!), and then you realise that it is littered with bugs and needs a whole day of head-scratching and debugging to make it function.

Having also read "CakePHP Application Development" I highly recommend that book for PHP developers trying to get to grips with CakePHP. Avoid this one, it is really very poor.

Some authors try to treat everything (quantity and not quality), and end up discouraging new developers with too much to take in. This Practical CakePHP Projects dips into the topics and end up with the application in an excellent approach. I highly recommend this book to chaps building websites with PHP.
