Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Ever wondered what it would be like to have free power?. Well now you can with the Solarmonkey - a fantastic portable solar charger that folds up neatly and can be stored away until you next need it!. With a tough, rubberised casing, the Solarmonkey can be attached to a rucksack, hung from a window, left in a car or taken anywhere the sun shines!. Please be aware that this is a solar product with no internal battery, it works from UV light so the stronger the sunlight - the better your solarmonkey will work - it's perfect if you're going on holiday!. The solarmonkey has been field-tested in the Amazon, the Arctic, The Himalayas and the heart of Africa where solar strength is good and the product powered devices excellently. Because of the dreary UK weather, you will not get the same results here!. And remember, if you're using the solarmonkey whilst inside a room such as a conservatory, some glass panes have a UV filter which may affect the power output of the solarmonkey.

I have been using a Solarmonkey for nearly a year now and its a great little device if you know how to use it properly! Make sure the panel is in direct sunlight and facing the sun at all times and you wont get any issues - obviously its a solar product so its not going to work on grey and gloomy days - its not magic! One word of advice is check that you are supplied with the Solarmonkey WITH solarnut version - this Solarnut aids the panel in providing a constant and correct output.

If you would like a device which is able to store the power generated from the panel before discharging into a device you should consider purchasing the Powermonkey eXplorer unit.....

There's no point using a small solar panel like this for direct charging unless you have a device with VERY low power requirements. The battery controllers of most portable digital devices will not actually start charging the battery until the input amperage rises above a certain critical threshold - and even this panel's maximum rated output (240mA at 5V) may not be sufficient for some devices. In such a situation, the power that the panel produces is just wasted as heat.

The reason that most devices of this nature come with an internal (or attached) battery is to get over this problem - the battery can be trickle-charged at the low amperage that the panel produces, and can be discharged at the higher amperage that the attached devices require.

Bottom line - without a battery, this thing is next to useless. Get the PowerMonkey Explorer instead.

I was given a SolarMonkey and SolarNut as a gift. I have a Blackberry phone and the required connector (power tip) is not supplied with it. I managed to get one easily from PowerTraveller. So far so good. Unfortunately, when I tried to charge my phone, the green light illuminated on the Monkey, the red light appeared on the nut and the charging symbol showed on my Blackberry, but the phone didn't charge - in fact, what little charge was on the phone seemed to drain away. As you do, I looked at a number of reviews which suggested that it might not be designed to charge a smartphone. I decided to contact PowerTraveller to find out whether I needed to upgrade the Monkey, the Nut, or both. I was delighted by the response from PowerTraveller. They asked a few questions about what lights were showing and when, and then sent me a new SolarMonkey, SolarNut and power tip. My phone now charges very quickly in daylight (even on a cloudy day in Scotland). The only obvious difference I can see is that the green light on the replacement Monkey is much brighter than on my old one. This gadget does work very well indeed and their customer service can't be faulted.
