4.0 out of 5 stars Brave New World 15 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I recently read Powerless: The Synthesis on my Kindle for iphone app, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will admit up front that I am a sucker for all things superhero. Flying people? Let me at it! Super-human strength? I'll read it! Telekinesis? Yes, please!

Uncontrollable sweat with the consistency of Crisco? Um... Control and mastery over grubs and earthworms? Yikes!!

No, this is not your typical comic-book superhero storyline. Jason Letts (who, by the way, is an immensely funny guy and a blast to chat with online) has created a world where EVERYBODY receives a super power upon birth. Some are lucky, and get the "nifty" powers like strength, speed, or mind control. Many get not-so-nifty powers like really bendy thumb or the ability to communicate with grapenuts.

Still, the main character, Mira Ipswitch, is the unluckiest of all. She has NO power whatsoever. Because of this, her parents had kept her sheltered from the rest of the world for her pre-teenage years. Finally revealing the truth, they let her attend her Senior year of school, where she has to use her intelligence and natural abilities to fit in with her suspicious classmates.

All of this is set in a world that seems very primitive. You would think with everyone having superpowers, there would be teeming metropolises, mega-transportation centers, and an intricate governing body. Instead, the world Mira is awakened to consists of an outpost, little more than an encampment, really, governed by one town elder who hears all.

This is book 1 in a 5-part series, and the ending does indeed set the stage well for a second act. Anyone looking for a fun new Young Adult series would do well to check out Powerless. Especially since it's only 72 pence on the Kindle!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and different, try it! 23 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I initially bought this because of it's low price on Kindle. I wasn't sure what to expect but I really liked this story and thought that there were a lot of new ideas introduced.
The book is set in a different world, one where every baby is born with a special power, some are dangerous or exciting, such as being able to manipulate gravity, wind or even emotions and some are mundane or useless such as sweating oil or being exceptionally warm. The central character is Mira, a young girl who has no power. Kept isolated by her parents for fifteen years, for her own protection, when she finally is let out into the world Mira faces a struggle to fit in and find her place.
Mira was an interesting character, socially inept as well as being different makes life difficult and I thought she dealt well with the difficulties she faced. At times she was childlike and naive because of her isolation and this made her endearing yet she was also determined and showed lots of strength of character.
The premise of everyone having gifts was good and I liked the variety of powers particularly some of the rubbish ones. I thought that although keeping Mira isolated was understandable, it was naive and selfish of her parents to think that they could have her live her life like that for so long. I enjoyed the interaction between the classmates and liked the different trials they had to face.
The novel started off slowly but then built up in pace and I couldn't put it down towards the end. The ending itself was dramatic and exciting and there are exciting possibilities to be explored throughout the series leaving me looking forward to reading part 2. Highly recommend to someone wanting something a bit different.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting.... 7 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I nearly gave up with this book but as usual my curiosity of hoping the book would get better was actually correct. I enjoyed the book although I thought it was probably pitched at a younger (11-15) reader. Will buy the next one just to find out how things all pan out.

5.0 out of 5 stars great first installment 22 Mar 2011

this is a story about mira who is kept apart from her fellow humans by her parents, because unlike the rest of the people around her she has no special magical talent. this about her struggle and finding her identity. it is a mix between trudi canavan and terry pratchett, with magic, fantasy and war time parallels. great read, i recommend you give this author a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! 22 Feb 2012

Absolutely read this. And then get the other 4 books too to finish the story. I read all five in a week, just desperate to find out what was going to happen next. I will be encouraging my teenage son to read them now.

A teen/Adult book, This is a teenagers with mutant powers thing. The great thing about this series of books though was that they are all finished so no waiting for the next book to come out which made me very happy. If you like this then try the Gone series by Michael Grant, and if you like those then try this!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure... 1 Feb 2012

Hmm,

Downloaded this because it was free.

I found the storyline itself interesting, but I wasn't drawn into the book at all. I read the entire book feeling bored despite wanting to know what happened (and hoping the author would develop more as the story did).

At first I thought the characters were too flat, and perhaps they are, but I think the main problem was the complete lack of 'world-building'. The whole thing felt disconnected as the world they lived in was under-developed. As a result I found it hard to connect with the characters, it just didn't feel real to me.

I guess I'm writing this review in the hope the author might somehow improve upon it. I sort of want to know what happens next, but I won't be getting the next book because I was too bored reading this one.

Good idea, the writing needs a little polishing/chemistry.
