In the last 30 years I have bought _every conceivable kind_ of battery charger: slow, fast, ultra-fast, "smart", digital, etc.: you name it, I tried it...

The problem with them has always been (for me) finding a reliable, multi-functional fast recharger, capable of recharging AA/AAA batteries of ANY capacity in a relatively short time WITHOUT KILLING THEM.

There are actually _lots_ of so-called "smart" chargers out there, capable of recharging any odd number of batteries of any kind in a very short time (which can be very bad for the batteries, if done wrongly, by the way...), stopping the charging when the batteries are full (...supposedly!).

The problem with many "smart" chargers of this kind (as any person that ever used these devices probably knows already) is that they can turn out to be quite "dumb", actually: as a matter of fact, many of them are designed to work properly only with batteries having the SAME (or LOWER) CAPACITY OF THE BATTERIES INCLUDED WITH THE CHARGERS THEMSELVES! This usually becomes evident when you start using newest, more powerful batteries, having a _higher_ capacity, compared to the "old" ones included with the chargers... The "latest" batteries often have _the same operation time_ of the old batteries you got with the chargers!

For example, I noticed that I could never recharge properly my newest 2800 mAh AA batteries in my old "smart" chargers, which were sold with 2300, 2000 or 2500 mAh batteries...

IMHO, the problem sits with the fact that most "smart", quick chargers with _fixed_ charging rate use a combination of different methods to stop the charge, including, among others, _a safety timer_ and a temperature sensor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great device - but beware prices 6 Jun 2010
Everyone should have something like this. I bought my two from the German amazon site, where it is about half the price as it is here on the UK site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the name, just look at the options! 10 Jan 2011
By Mr. Mischief TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
The Maha Powerex MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger / Analyzer (catchy name) is what many consider to be the daddy of AA & AAA, NiCad / NiMH battery chargers. A reputation like that doesn't come easily, and it's one the Maha has obtained by offering the user more in the way of functionality than your average charger.

Firstly, you get 5 charging options:-
`Charge' simply does a single charge of the batteries at a current you set.
`Discharge' does a single discharge at a current you set.
`Refresh & Analyze' puts the batteries through a charge / discharge / charge cycle at a current you set.
`Break In' puts the batteries through a slow charge / discharge / charge cycle to prepare new batteries for first use.
`Cycle' goes through a programmable number of charge / discharge cycles to bring up old and worn batteries.

Despite its plethora of functions, the C9000 is actually really easy to use, if you've taken the time to read the manual first. Plug it in and turn it on, place a battery into once of the 4 charging slots and if you don't press a button within 5 seconds it will do an ordinary 1000mA charge. If you want to use a different charge setting, press the `Up' and `Down' buttons until the one you require is displayed, then press the `Enter' button. You may then be prompted to enter a charging current, which you access in the same manner. Nicely, if you place more than one battery in at a time, then the charger will prompt you to set the options for each slot in turn rather than all at once.

The whole thing is surprisingly intuitive and aided no end by the large backlit LCD screen, which tells you quite clearly just what the C9000 wants you to do next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 17 May 2012
By 12345!
Just wanted to leave a comment regarding how excellent this product is.

Contrary to some reviews it is not difficult to use (spend an hour reading the minimal and precise instructions & button pressing through short menu options and you will get it easily), the programmable options allow the user to choose how they are going to charge their AA's and or AAA's.

Generally it will take 0-10 button presses to set up each cells charge cycle and most of that is just moving the cursor to the correct program followed by the charge rate (a selectable number) followed by the discharge rate (a selectable number). Thats the most complicated it gets. Straight charge is easier still.

I found this table which is very useful and wrote it out in the C9000 instruction manual for when I want to set it up at the recommended rates.

A general rule of thumb is that the recommended charging current is set to 0.5 times the battery capacity (Also known as 0.5C). The recommended discharging current 0.25 times the battery capacity (Also known as 0.25C), So:

2700mAh Charge: 1300mA Discharge: 700mA

2650mAh Charge: 1300mA Discharge: 700mA

2500mAh Charge: 1200mA Discharge: 600mA

2300mAh Charge: 1100mA Discharge: 600mA

2200mAh Charge: 1100mA Discharge: 600mA

2100mAh Charge: 1000mA Discharge: 500mA

2000mAh Charge: 1000mA Discharge: 500mA

1000mAh Charge: 500mA Discharge: 200mA

900mAh Charge: 400mA Discharge: 200mA

850mAh Charge: 400mA Discharge: 200mA

800mAh Charge: 400mA Discharge: 200mA

700mAh Charge: 300mA Discharge: 200mA

650mAh Charge: 300mA Discharge: 200mA

600mAh Charge: 300mA Discharge: 200mA

Where can you go wrong?
