5.0 out of 5 stars Top Marks Charger 9 July 2010
By Lenna
Amazon Verified Purchase
About 2 months ago, my iPhone having run out of power at 3 crucial times in a week, I decided I had to invest in a battery backup device. Originally I didn't think about a solar charger at all, but having found this product am glad I decided to buy it as it is a life saver. The original one of these I bough 2 months ago wasn't from Amazon, but I decided to buy another one after my boyfriend kept stealing mine!
I normally just charge the backup gadget up itself by plugging it into the USB port on my computer and then leave it in my handbag for when I need it. The manufacturer states it can hold its power for 6 months and I can't comment on this as have not had it long enough and doubt I will ever not use it for 6 months anyway. I like the way it has a slide out 2nd panel as this means it is very small when not fully out. I have only used it 2 or 3 times as a solar charger but seems to charge itself fine when I tried. I only use the iPhone connector so maybe the fact it comes with 9 connectors is a bit of a waste as I doubt anyone will need all 9, but suppose easier just to package all together. Overall I have lost count how many times I have used this to restore power to my phone so well worth the £20.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty? Or just a very bad product? 10 Feb 2011
By mark
The signs were promising, the charger was delivered quicker than I expected, there were a number of adaptors to fit almost any make of mobile phone, so I was looking forward to trying this out. After giving this a full charge I realized it only gives a couple of hours of charge - at best. The tale tale sign I guess is that the marketing for this product doesn't expressly state how much charge it will give. Other solar chargers on the market, once fully charged will give 18 hours + of charge so this product is very disappointing. If you want just a couple hours of extra charge then this product is for you, having said that the solar panel once ejected from the main body of the charger does not click back, it is just left hanging out of the main body, bad design or shoddy - I am not sure. Taking into account that the length of charge is not stated and the customer service I received before buying was not at all helpful (sounded like a home run small operation) I would proceed with caution. I wish I didn't haveto write a review like this but they wasted my time and I thought I might save some of yours.

A fabulous piece of kit this, does what it says nicely and simply. I have used it for both the iPhone and the HTC Desire. Whilst there is no direct plug for the HTC Desire the box does come with a handy USB adapter which lets you plug your normal mains charger lead (the USB end!) into the adapter which then fits snugly into the solar power unit. The unit is well made and has a solid feel. All in all, a great addition to your camping kit!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solar powered phone charger 5 Dec 2010
By DougH
Great little item, it arrived really fast and although quite small has a solid feel. I first charged it up by usb to try it and it performed well with the iphone. I now leave it on the dashboard of my car to charge, but being winter takes a fair bit longer than it would in the summer sun. Wonderful stand-by product for that emergency situation. I'm taking it to the med next year to ensure I have power while sailing. Well worth the money. 1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work for me 16 July 2011
I bought this charger to take with me to Sonisphere to charge my HTC Desire. I expected at worst to be able to charge up the internal battery before I left and so get one charge out of it, even if the solar panels weren't up to the job.

Well, I charged it overnight, unplugged it on Friday morning, and shoved it in a pocket in my trousers. That evening I tried to charge my phone from it, only to find that it was dead.

Sunday was pretty sunny for a while, so I tried using the solar panels to charge my phone (switching it off first to maximise the charging). After a couple of hours of apparently charging (the LED on the phone was on, indicating that it was charging), I switched the phone on to check the battery level - absolutely no change. I realise that the panels won't be able to match charging from the mains, but in that time charging it normally would have completely replenished the battery.

Perhaps I got a dud but based on my experience I would recommend avoiding this product. Next time I'll take a dedicated battery pack (like one of my friends who had no problems) and maybe a spare battery for the phone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not good...honestly 15 Jun 2011
By solarPV
Bought several of these but none worked as a solar charger. The concept is very good, charge control, battery et al. , but no current from the Sun. There is voltage(enough), but no amperage no matter how strong is the Sun. Theoretically, each small module is rated 5.5V @ 50mA = 0.275W ( connected in parallel produce 5.5V @ 100mA). Measured at Standard Testing Conditions (1000W/m2 at 25C) which could be reproduced holding(briefly) 50W bulb very close gives 6.1V and 0.7mA = 0.0427W. This would never charge a battery, sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier 31 Mar 2011
The description of this product says it all it does work with everything. It has it's own in built battery as well so you can charge it up before you need it as well instead of just using it with sunlight. Tip of advice before you buy, the in-built battery needs some charge before it'll charge your appliances.
