The official Panasonic VW-VBG260 high-capacity battery costs well over £100 (try justifying that to the wife!) so I've been looking at the cheap alternatives. There are plenty third-party manufactured VW-VBG260 batteries out there, many I bought and then had to return irritated to the sellers because none worked as they claimed: they would run for no longer than the low capacity VW-VBG130 that comes with the camcorder, which defeats the purpose of a hi-capacity battery; some wouldn't even warn the camcorder in time before power runs out during recording, so the camera neither had a chance to shut its automatic lens cover nor close the recording file on the SD card (the latter can lead to a potentially corrupted recording file, recording loss or even damaged SD card). So after reading reviews of this PowerPlanet version, I bought the battery and tried it as a final chance, and if it failed like the others then I was ready to give up on these cheap alternatives and just fork out on the expensive Panasonic official. And what can I say? All the reviews about this particular product were correct! I tested the battery on my Panasonic HDC-SD700 camcorder, continuously recording in 1080/50p mode (the most power-hungry recording mode) and it filled my 32 GB SD card in 2 hours 45 mins. I then formatted the card, and the camera recorded contiuously in the same mode for a further 25 mins before finally running out of juice. Some reviewers say the battery fits a bit loose on the camcorder, but I didn't find that a problem as I found it wobbled only slightly and just as with the official WV-VBG130 battery suppled with the camcorder, so the wobbly fitting is very normal. Others commented on the size/length of the battery; again, I would say it's normal as the official VW-VBG260 is also long because, after all, it's a high capacity battery so needs to be bigger to accommodate the extra charge-holding material. The only thing I haven't tested is the lifetime of the battery compared to the original, before recharges stop working.
TEST SUMMARY:
1. Charges on official Panasonic HDC-SD700 charger.
2. Fully charged battery records continuously in 1080/50p mode for more than 3 hours.
3. Shows remaining power accurately on camcorder display.
4. When power runs out, the camera gracefully shuts down, shutting the automatic lens cover and closing the video file if recording was still in progress.
Overall, this battery is great value for money, not only because of the price but also because this actually WORKS AS STATED. If ever I'm looking for a second VW-VBG260 battery or anyone asks me for an alternative to the expensive pfficial Panasonic product, I now know exactly where to refer!
