5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book 6 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I recently stumbled upon the world of yoga through the Wii Fit which I received as a present at Xmas. After completing all of the exercises on there, I found myself wanting more. Basically, I was looking for a book with poses in it and instructions on how to do them as I don't have a lot of spare time or much money to spend on going to classes. I searched on here for quite a while, reading reviews and such before choosing Power Yoga. Don't be put off by the title by the way. You do not need to be some fitness guru to do it! I am a complete novice and really haven't done much in the way of fitness for the majority of my, nearly, 36 years.
BBB has written the book in such a way that it will appeal to anyone regardless of their fitness level or experience. I have started with the sun salutations as she suggests. She recommends doing repetitions of these for a few weeks until you have mastered them. I did think to myself, "How boring!", but seriously, I soon learned that these are a challenge in themselves. Every day I do them, I feel that I have done something positive for my body. I can feel that I've used my muscles too! My strength and flexibility are increasing all the time and I've just moved on to including some standing poses into my routine.
The poses in the book do take a fair bit of practice but BBB talks you through each pose and includes photo's and adaptations for beginners and anyone with health problems.
This really is an inspirational read and you will find yourself just reading it for the uplifting stories and qualities it contains. BBB hasn't had it easy and knew she was looking for something in life. She came across yoga which centred her. I think a bit of that exists in everyone - where am I going? - what should I be doing?, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book to aid your YOGA practice 13 Jan 2000
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic detailed guide to Power Yoga (or Ashtanga Vinyasa as its commonly know outside the USA). It is really well written with each posture clearly explained. Beryl's writing is very inspirational. When I find it hard to just get on with my Practice, I often curl up and read and reread her book. A great tool to help you alongside a regular class, its also clear enough to teach a beginner who doesnt have access to a class. Power Yoga has changed my life - mentally, emotionally and physically and strangely has greatly improved my cardio fitness too. How can yoga help you sprint effortlessly for a bus? Beats me, you have to try it for yourself. I highly recommend this guide. I knocked off one star only because I think it would be useful to have all the postures detailed (even in sketch) in a summary type way - for those moments when you're hot and sweaty and need to know at a glance what comes next. Otherwise it would be 5 stars plus. Good luck with your Practice - your body mind and soul will love you long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal for yoga beginners to practice at home. 11 Jun 2002
Format:Paperback
I've had this book since 1995 and have practised on and off since then. Beryl's book is inspiring to read, she really encourages the reader to practice, and to practice it correctly, to avoid injury. She doesn't patronise the reader and keeps yoga to a level which is easier for westerners to grasp. The pictures are very good and she'll guide you through the positions, always mentioning how a beginner should approach it. I can now achieve positions with my body which I never thought possible, and physical and mental improvements are noticeable within 3 months of regular practice. Best of all, yoga can be done at home, without having to fork out for expensive gym fees! I'd recommend this book to anyone who is disciplined or wants to be! She also offers advice on how to eat more healthily and meditate. When practiced correctly, sweat will be pouring from your body and you will feel pretty tired by the end of the practice. Power Yoga is NOT for the faint hearted!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good results from the first try 13 Jan 2005
Format:Paperback
I started reading the book and tried to get familiar with the poses of sun-salute A, their order and the transitions. It took me some time to finish the first series, checking with the book to verify correct position. I'm not very flexible so I had to try to find a pose that resembled the photos as much as possible but was still comfortable for me. I tried four more series after that. At the end I was feeling hot and sweating, something that good according to the book. I felt as if I had done a workout that was good for the strength and flexibility of my whole body. It feels like a great workout to complement my efforts in the gym.

The author concentrates on what's good for his reader's health and general well being instead of the cosmological aspects of yoga. I'm eager to work trough all of the book.

Never having attempted yoga before, I joined a local class, and after lesson two, came across "Power Yoga" by Beryl Bender Birch. It immediately helped to increase my understanding of all the verbal instruction in my class and also gave me more of an insight into what I could gain from this type of Yoga. I feel that I could really become "hooked" to this form of Yoga. The book is well documented and the photography is excellent with easy to follow instructions. I shall certainly use this book to assist me with my lessons and hope one day to be able to master all of its contents.
