Product Description

They were half-brothers, raised in different worlds in the same country, and destined to be lifelong enemies. Manfred De La Ray and Shasa Courtney, sons of Centaine de Thiry, were blood enemies from their very first boyhood encounter. Caught up in the tumult of South Africa's history through two decades, they found themselves adversaries in an age-old war of savagery to seize the sword of power in their land. Sweeping from the teeming goldfields of the highland to the secret citadels of Afrikaaner power, from the clamouring stadiums of Hitler's Berlin Olympics to the raging war over Abyssinia.

4.0 out of 5 stars Corking read 28 Feb 2009
Format:Paperback
I read the other reviews before I bought this book, and I was glad that I bought it. The reviews pretty well summed the book up. For me the book was at first slow at establishing a story and seemed to drift from time to time. Once the main characters were established the story developed like watching a feature length movie. I love the way Smith potrays his characters to be so life like almost tangible. I would recommend this book to anyone who has read previous Wilbur Smith books, not as a first time read due to its slow start.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wilbur Smith 8 July 2005
Format:Hardcover
I began reading Wilbur Smith several years ago with his Egyptian series. Since then I have read and enjoyed all of his novels up to this point in the Courtney series. I found a website a few years ago that follows the timelines of all of his novels and I found it best to read them in this order. As most of you may know the books seem to start and end with the lifetimes of the characters. It saddens me to know that someday soon the characters will catch up to our present day. But that is the beauty of books. You can read them over and over again. This book captures an era which was described to me by my grandfather many years ago. His life was much different than what happens here but many of his stories reflect what Wilbur Smith describes in this book....Enjoy!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced emotional rollercoaster of a read. 11 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Right from the first few pages you are engrossed in yet another Wilbur Smith classic. His attention to detail will have you unable to put the book down. Throughout the novel you will find your loyalties to the key characters constantly changing. The way Smith intertwines the various storylines, rather than confusing the overall plot, only deepens the intrigue. Wilbur Smith is a very addictive novellist.

Another great sequel in the series. I'm gripped by the Courtney Family adventures. It's difficult to compare Wilbur Smith to any other author.
