Biography

Power Station was a 1980s supergroup made up of singer Robert Palmer, bassist John Taylor, guitarist Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, and former Chic drummer Tony Thompson. Bernard Edwards, also of Chic, was involved on the studio side as recording producer. For a short time he also functioned as Power Station's manager. The band was formed in New York City late in 1984 during a break in Duran Duran's… Read more in Amazon's The Power Station Store

Product Description

Album Review

Under the direction of guitarist Andy Taylor, the Power Station is an attempt to break free from the constraints of Duran Duran's polished synth-pop, adding elements of funk, courtesy of Chic drummer Tony Thompson, as well as straightahead hard rock, courtesy of vocalist Robert Palmer. Everything is polished with a glossy sheen, which makes the record sound similar to Duran Duran. The cover of T. Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" and the single "Some Like It Hot" work up enough energy to make this a memorable album. --All Music Guide

The Powerstation project brought together some of the biggest names from this period in 80's pop culture.
the trendy and (well Andy Taylor atleast) talented Duranies, the classic and classy R&B voice of Robert Palmer, the thumping back beat from the excellent Tony Thompson from 'Chic' brilliantly orchestrated by the Brilliant Bernard Edwards.
This album and the DVD (I already have the original vhs version from the time) are must haves for any music collection and still dont sound dated.

The only disapointment would be if a whole new genertion missed out on this one off musical collaboration.

The real tragety comes knowing that only the Durranies (Andy and John) are the only members of this project to survive.

Fantastic........ 13 July 2005
Format:Audio CD
Mix the pure class of Robert Palmer with the tremendous backbeat of Chic drummer Tony Thompson and stir it together with two duranies John & Andy Taylor and you get an LP full of quality upbeat rock/pop tunes.

This album is really alive starting with the blistering "Some Like it Hot" - You have never heard a drum sound like it! Other quality tracks include T-Rex cover "Get it on", the heavy rocker "Murderess", the fantastic drum, synth led "Lonely tonight" and the monster rock/pop of "Communication" - infact there are no dud tracks and its a must for any serious 80's rock/pop collector - I LOVE THIS LP!!!

John's Pet Project 22 Mar 2005
Format:Audio CD
FYI - The Power Station was John Taylor's pet project, not Andy's. Amazon - Please don't use AMG reviews. Stephen Thomas Erlewine (editor) doesn't take the time to do any research - he just makes things up to get as many reviews written as possible. JOHN Taylor (Duran Duran) assembled the ultimate 80's supergroup for the Power Station, and the videos alone on DVD are enough to grab this now. Robert Palmer was recruited for vocals (but later dropped out of the tour) along with Michael DesBarres (who picked up the tour). Former David Bowie drummer Tony Thompson is a powerhouse on drums. Andy Taylor was getting flighty by this point (esp. with Duran) but provides great funk guitar and rock-heavy amazing riffs. Ultimately though, John Taylor gets credit for this album - he recruited everyone and wrote the songs.
