After hearing Hassell's collaboration with Brian Eno on "Possible Musics",I had to hear more and this album was the launchpad for me to acquire every album he had made up until then - and since! It opens up with the title track,deeply percussive and ponderous in rhythm,and continues this way into the next track until we enter the creepy sounding 'Solaire' which embellishes it's darkness of sound with subtle electronic touches - the best track on the album for me! The second half of the album moves into Eastern Asian territory musically with percussion and trumpet eerily dancing a duet aided by an impressive array of musicians such as Michael Brook,JA Deane,Richard Horowitz,Brian Eno,and Jean-Phillipe Rykiel.I still think "Power Spot" is his best album,but many of his other releases run it mighty close,and he has yet to release a duff album in my view!

Power Spot in my view ranks among the essential Jon Hassell - Possible Musics, and Dream Theory being the other two. Power Spot is more groove orientated, with more emphasis and complexity to the strong ethnically flavoured acoustic rhythm patterns, which I find reminiscent of the Eno/Byrne 'Life in the Bush of Ghosts' album. Jon's heavily processed trumpet floats over the top as usual, though other elements such as the wonderful flute in the last number share some of the space. As such this provides a real contrast with the other recordings I mention, and its certainly more varied. It's also a great place to start if you like groove with your ambient.
