Amazing! A must read to anyone who wants to improve their life!,
By
This review is from: The Power (Hardcover)
The Power is amazing, I have read The Secret too but highly recommend reading both. I have found the book has made a positive difference to my life. My outlook is even more positive than it was before. I really do believe that there is more to life than the day to day happenings and the reason why we are here makes so much more sense now! We all have the power to have everything we want in life, we just have to be grateful for what we do have, be happy for others, believe in receiving what you want and just wait for it to all happen. Read this book if you are fed up with being negative and always feeling like your life is a hard grind! The book makes you realise that life is not meant to be a hard grind, you don't have to work your a** off doing something you hate to get everything you want, your circumstances can change, you are not meant to be stuck in a rut, you should be living a life where you have everything you ever wanted or dreamed of. You just have to believe in yourself and know that you are worth it. Don't let other sceptical people put you off this book and others like it, they are obviously too absorbed in their day to day life to stop and look at the bigger picture, the universe and creation! Keep persevering and your wishes will all be granted! Enjoy the book and enjoy life!!! : )

An Excellent Refinement of New Thought Principles,
By Alexander T. Newport (England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Power (Hardcover)
This review speaks with a forked tongue. It damns and it praises.I live in the middle of me and play mind-tennis on the court of Positive and Negative. I can't do the 100% pure positive thang. It goes against my nature. I can't live happily without the word No. I can't live happily without exercising my right to criticise and point out why I don't like something on the buffet table. But, I am wise enough to have learned my lesson about dwelling on or staring at something I don't like until the point of illness or suicidal despair. Been there, done that. Not fun. As long as you are charging for supposedly helpful information meant to alleviate the suffering and increase the success and happiness of your fellow brothers and sisters, then you are neither brotherly or sisterly. You are a pimp and your whore is the helpful information, right? You have the information but you won't release it without being paid first. Your prostitutes are your workshops, seminars, packs of cards, calendars with quotes on them, dvds, cds, and books. And it's all perfectly legal...but is it moral? Doesn't it feeeel wrong & bad that these people talk about love, LOVE, love, but don't give away such talk for free? Don't give it away free with a hug? When I am in love I am willing to give away anything because I know my good feelings and love are not in those things. I don't feel like withholding helpful information or directions until I am paid first. I feel free and give freely. And at the very least, dontcha think these people would reach a level of millions in their bank accounts where they wouldn't feel the need anymore to charge money for their information? But instead they create an industry, a corporate empire out of their information about Love (or God/Source)...It just strikes me as icky and unethical. I guess the most positive spin I can give them is that they are charging for their PERFORMANCE of their particular threads of information. The information is available free to all of us within ourselves. We don't need them to give it to us and therefore if we go to them for it they have every right to charge whatever they want. It still ain't brotherly or sisterly of them to charge for such information, but they all point out at one time or another that God/Source/Love/Law of Attraction is completely AMORAL. As Kurt Vonnegut said, "Be kind, and know that God doesn't care whether you are or not." Have you ever wondered why you are attracted to information regarding New Thought & The Law of Attraction, even though you are a pessimist and cynic? It's because when you read about it you can feel this feeling inside of you jumping up & down shouting YES! YES! YES! When they say life is supposed to be fun and you are the cause of your suffering and success, that feeling inside you says YES! YES! YES! So you try it out the next time you're standing in a line: Instead of silently complaining and moaning about the length of it and how late you're now gonna be to wherever, you deliberately look around the room for things to appreciate. Look for pretty faces, pretty bodies, pretty clothes. Appreciate how most everyone is behaving in a civil and decent manner. Appreciate your own clothes. Be glad you don't feel unwell. Be glad you're healthy enough to stand in that damn line! And take notice how you are feeling better just by finding things to appreciate and feel glad about---no matter how tiny or mundane. Take note of how easily the day flows when you are deliberately finding things throughout it that please you or make you feel glad. And take note how interminable the hours seem to be when you are feeling worried or bitter or anxious... You KNOW these teachers of the Law of Attraction are onto something...you can just FEEL IT in your guts, your solar plexus, your fists... But what puts you off is the inner knowing that you MUST make a deliberate effort to consciously pivot from negative to positive as soon as you realize you are feeling bad. You simply mustn't allow yourself to remain on roads-of-thought that lead to thick & sticky hells of despair or worry or outright hatred for life and yourself. What puts you off is the inner knowing that you have some strong habits of pessimism, defeatism, and cynicism---all of which you employed to protect yourself from disappointments, but those protectors are your greatest abusers and terrorists. They limit your beliefs so there are no miracles or magic in your life. They limit how far and big you allow yourself to dream. They keep you in a life that is all boxed in with doubts and disbeliefs. They keep you in a life that is mostly re-active rather than pro-active. They also facilitate a life where you are always gonna be happy when This or That happens but until then you gotta be serious and uptight and alert for any possible things that can go wrong. What a horrid life! And guess what? You ARE gonna make the deliberate effort eventually. At first it will be in fits and starts, but gradually you will get the hang of it. Each of us has been designed to unfold this way. It feels much better to be happy here and now. It feels much better to make the effort to stay happy (or at least well) rather than live a life of continually needing to rescue myself from the depths of despair or crisis. The key is to get off the road to Doom & Gloom sooner rather than later. And it is ALWAYS a mental thing. My feelings, my state of being, is ALWAYS the result of what I have been thinking and talking to myself about. And all along whilst thinking and talking, I am feeling feelings and they either feel encouraging and fun or they feel deflating and demoralizing and hopeless. It's my job to notice how I am feeling and then make the appropriate adjustments in my attitude and focus, adjustments in what I am saying to myself. I have learned by experience that the better I deliberately feel, the better everything goes for me on a daily basis---but that doesn't mean the washing machine won't break down or that someone I love won't be injured or killed. The off-putting thing about what these teachers teach about Law of Attraction, Law of Love, is that they give the impression you can reach or allow a constant state of flow whereby nothing bad or unpleasant or upsetting will happen to you---and it just ain't true! Look how many of these teachers themselves die of cancer! Not a quick, painless death, but a long, drawn out, disintegrating, painful and humiliating death! Richard Bach in his book Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah nailed it when he painted this portrait of creatures clinging to a river bank for fear of letting go and flowing with the river lest they sometimes smash into rocks and get hurt. I have found the risk is worth it. The risk of getting hurt by believing life is supposed to be fun. The risk of deliberately choosing to live happily here and now regardless of conditions, circumstances, or bad-news facts. I have found a better quality of life, here and now, through appreciation and celebration rather than being a "realist" or cynic or pessimist. Bad news will happen no matter how happy and optimistic I am and I will sometimes use it as an excuse to feel worried or angry---but not for too long, not to the point of illness or suicide, because I have learned by trial & error. Feeling bad leads to feeling worse and nothing in ALL of the universe can come to your rescue except you. So you train yourself to stop going there---just like you trained yourself to stop shoplifting or being afraid of elevators or thinking about how horrible it was to see your beloved pet die a skeletal and gasping death. You gotta do it on your own, mate. Can't wait for your spouse or the rest of your friends and family to join you. Train yourself to be happy and optimistic. It's who you really are. It's who you were before you "grew up". It costs nothing. You do it all in your head and heart. No paraphernalia needed. It only takes a minor effort to pivot from negative to positive. It only takes a minor effort to convince yourself about the Goodness of life---the truth that you are an eternal spirit who is unconditionally perfect and free to be, do, and have whatever you want. It only takes a minor effort to choose a lovely thought & feeling rather than one based on Lack & Fear. Rinse and repeat as often as you remember to. Ewwwww, it is soooooo delicious to allow yourself to daydream and imagine to the max everything you want to do, be, and have in this material world. You long ago stopped yourself from doing that because you couldn't figure out how or when you could make such dreams come true and so it hurt to look at them, but now you KNOW deep inside that you need not concern yourself with How or When and instead just start making plans for how you are going to milk it for all its worth when it comes. Feel NOW how good it's gonna feel THEN. Feel good NOW just for the sake of feeling good now rather than as a means to speed up what you are wanting to come. Any attempts to speed things up only slows things down. The getting the thing won't make you happy in and of itself: Only thinking good and feeling good about it will. Basically The Power is Rhonda Byrne's interpretation and rewording of the essence of the teachings of Abraham Hicks---without any Soul or Inner Being or inner Source of Infinite Intelligence. She just puts all those things under the umbrella of Love. There is just you and Love. Just you and the Law of Attraction. And frankly, it's not a bad way of getting the job done... She has diligently made sure there is no religiosity in her writing. There is no higher power than Love. Are you filling your now with worry and... Read more ›

inspiring but a little repetitive,
By
This review is from: The Power (Hardcover)
There are parts of this book which are definitely inspiring. It certainly makes you feel uplifted and creates a positive attitude, so that you feel stronger and more equipped to face the difficulties in your life. Rhonda Byrne helpfully reminds us that we have much more power than we think, and shows us how easy it can be to change ourselves and our lives for the better. However, The Secret benefitted from the input of a host of other authors, whereas here Rhonda Byrne tends to become a little repetitive. After a few chapters you feel you're reading the same thing expressed in slightly different ways. There isn't a massive amount of psychological insight either - some of the advice on how to harness the Power seems a little simplistic. For a more fulfilling and inspiring book, read Out of the Darkness, described by Eckhart Tolle as 'one of the best books on spiritual awakening I have come across.'Out of the Darkness: From Turmoil to Transformation
