This book is suitable for readers aged 8-12 years old. Poppy Pendle is a witch and a really good one, but the only trouble is she hates magic. She hates her school of witchcraft and flying a broomstick makes her feel sick. All she wants to do is bake and follow her dreams of owning her own bakery one day, however her parents have other ideas; they love having a witch for a daughter and are determined that she should follow in the footsteps of her great grandmother.
This book has elements of Roald Dahl's Matilda in that Poppy is also a special girl who is totally misunderstood by her parents. However, unlike Matilda whose parents hardly notice she exists, Poppy's parents are the smothering, pushy type who simply don't listen to what their daughter tries to tell them. Faced with their increasing obtuseness Poppy finally makes a stand but with dire consequences. In the words of Star Wars' Yoda, "Turned to the dark side she has"; but don't worry because all turns out well in the end.
A really great read from the start that will have you cheering for team Poppy all the way through, plus there is the bonus of a baker's dozen of recipes at the back of the book so you can try out Poppy's cakes for yourself.

It is 60 years since I visited Pendle Hill in Lancashire, so to be reminded of the witches that were said to come from there, linked to Poppy's name was delightful. Everyone will be able to relate to her adventures and many will try the recipes. I could see this story becoming an excellent children's film. The Power of Poppy Pendle (Paula Wiseman Books)

What a fun filled book! I love the recipes, especially Poppy's famous chocolate melt aways. This is my favourite book because i could not stop turning the pages to out what happened next. (Annie)
I thought this story was fascinating and so different from anything else I have read. It really showed how important it was to try hard to achieve one's goal! (Granny)
