Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

For many readers, Joseph Finder’s Paranoia was a breakthrough book. At a stroke (and after several earlier books), Finder became a must-read thriller author, even though he did not subsequently make the commercial breakthrough that many a lesser talent has – with lesser books. Power Play shows that (as Finder aficionados know) the author has not been idle – each new book by him shows a refining of his style and skill. And if this latest novel does not quite match the exhilaration afforded by Paranoia, it’s still a pretty persuasive piece of work – with ironclad plotting.

The theme here is corporate kidnapping. Finder’s protagonist, Landry, a talented aircraft engineer, finds himself invited to a corporate conference with his bosses. He’s ill-at-ease, condescended to by his high-flying colleagues – and even more discomforted when he finds an ex-lover – now a corporate high-flyer herself with the company -- is behind the invitation. But then an audacious, violent kidnapping of the entire group takes place. The body count rises, and Landry begins to look like everyone’s best hope for survival, while his more high-profile colleagues demonstrate less finely-honed survival instincts.

To say that the tension is orchestrated here with a master’s touch understates the case. Cliché it may be – but it has to be said: you won't be able to put this one down. It’s beginning to look like just a matter of time before Joseph Finder assumes his justified place in the upper echelons of thriller practitioners. --Barry Forshaw

Product Description

POWER PLAY is the explosive new novel from Joseph Finder, the CEO of the corporate thriller - reminiscent of the film DIE HARD, this novel is a breathless, near real-time action, high-stakes adventure that you won't want to stop reading.

Jake Landry is a junior executive at the Hammond Aerospace corporation - a steady, modest and taciturn man with a gift for keeping his head down, Jake also has a turbulent past that he would rather forget.
Ordered to fill in for his boss at the annual company retreat, Jake is out of his element, surrounded by the arrogant, swaggering men who run the company and his only distraction is the CEO's special assistant - his ex-girlfriend.
Then a group of local hunters crash the opening-night festivities. Soon the executives of the billion-dollar company are cut off from the rest of the world, trapped by men who have guns and a cunning plan to steal a vast fortune.
But the hostage-takers aren't who they appear to be, and neither is Jake Landry.
The only question is who is going to win the power play?

This was the first Finder book I have read and I will be tracking down some more..
Here we have top executives of a corporation being held hostage at a weekend retreat. However, there is a young man there prepared to go 'Die Hard' on them before time runs out for them all.
Good stuff and as the backstory to the main character unravels we start to understand that his experience has made him the ideal person to be there.
Very fast moving although the lead character is a little too clever and laid back -this is good stuff and a solid page turner.

Joseph Finder has frequently been compared with John Grisham because of his skill in portraying the business world as expertly as Grisham depicts the legal profession. But Finder's new novel, Power Play, also brings to mind the works of Tom Clancy. Instead of a prophetic account of a vengeful Japanese pilot crashing a jumbo jet into the Capitol, we are afforded a preview of the kidnapping for a huge ransom of a large multinational corporation's top executives meeting at a remote retreat through an intricate plot featuring Grisham-like twists. The successful struggles of the company's new female chief executive officer to defend her prerogatives seem like a reverse riff upon recent real-life events at the Hewlett-Packard Company. Permeating this focused, superbly researched, and tragicomic narrative in which unforeseen consequences inevitably occur are flashes of the irreverence, self-deprecation, and wry humor that we have learned to expect from Finder's chief characters, along with a carefully wrought happy ending.

Power Play has a generally similar feel to that of Paranoia, essentially a protagonist who works for a large company and is far too clever, insightful, insinctive etc to be in such a low position. Don't get me wrong, the air of mystery to the main character allows for growth, development and well spliced flash backs but the amount of characters can slow down what should be a very fast paced adventure. Every staff member attending the retreat that falls prey to these mysterious 'hunters' is referred to by first and last name interchangably and I found myself having to check a few times who was saying what and what had happened to whom. The story develops well and tensions rise as the stakes are raised. As always, the main character in Finder's story sees more than the others and becomes rather opitimised by the finale but nonetheless a good read with very thourough detail displaying Finder's great attention to research and detail.
