Product Description

DS Kate Power moves to Birmingham, and getting to grips with a new team is not easy: some think she's a bit of fresh meat, others think she's not pulling her weight. Kate's aunt has given her the house from hell, so domestic pressure matches professional pressure - then the two start to overlap.

This is quite an enjoyable read with a pretty strong story and a strong female lead character.

The basic story is pretty solid and the paedophile ring plot certainly makes for an emotional and involving detective story. That said, Kate solves things more by luck than brilliant detective work. Overhearing conversations that give you a big clue are a lazy way of plotting a murder investigation story!

Kate Power does, in essence, make quite a strong lead. Her traumatic reason for leaving the Met and the dilapidated house she moves into provide her with some very real emotional difficulties which gives the novel a very character-driven feel. That said, she is a bit too good to be true. Not particularly memorable but an enjoyable way to pass the time.

Power on her Own by Judith Cutler. Kate Power is transferred to the Birmingham CID following the death of her partner and police colleague Robin. This is a fresh start for Kate not only with the new job, but also in the renovation of the house her Aunt Cassie has given to her, having decided to end her days in a comfortable residential home. By the state of the house Aunt Cassie has the better deal.

On her first day at work, Kate encounters resentment from some of her colleagues who have agenda's of their own. Dealing with this, and her grief is a test of Kate's strength and ability.

The major case being investigated is the abduction and sexual abuse of a small boy. Desk bound for the first couple of weeks, Kate soon begins to fret at the inactivity, and starts some investigations of her own. Although she makes one or two allies's, the one person she feels she can trust is first sent away on a course and then unavailable. Thus Kate finds herself juggling her own investigations with her demanding job and several times falls foul off her immediate boss through no real fault of her own.

On a social level, Kate becomes involved with the local Baptist church as a result of her aunt offering her services as a temporary organist, and becomes friends with the Minister and his wife, and family, which leads to complications.

Apart from being a good mystery, this book had depth in the portrayal of the character of Kate Power. I became involved with Kate from page one, she shows both vulnerability and strength, and I eagerly look forward to finding out how she copes with the next stage of her life. I am hoping that this book is the first in a series.

Engaging English police procedural 3 July 2003
By Harriet Klausner - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Her lover and police partner saves the life of Detective Sergeant Kate Power when he pushes her out of the way of an oncoming vehicle. His valiant effort leaves Robin dead. A distraught Kate cannot display her grief at her devastating loss because Robin's widow and children legally own that right. Unable to cope with the memories and refusing to work with the individual who caused the failed operation that led to Robin's death, Kate, using the excuse of caring for an elderly relative, transfers to Birmingham.

Her great-aunt Cassie moves into a senior citizen community while also giving her house to Kate to live in though it needs plenty of repairs. Between the renovations and adjusting to her new law enforcement job, Kate has little time to think about Robin though she has been stuck in the office since arriving in Birmingham. Unable to resist and fighting ennui, Kate begins her own inquiries into the case of the sexual assaults on two small boys and the alleged murder of one the lads.

This is an engaging English police procedural that works on two levels. The investigation is top rate and hooks the audience from the moment Kate dives into it. As fascinating is the deep look into the mourning by Kate, the "other woman" who cannot let her grief be known to anyone. Thus readers obtain a deep character study inside a strong detective tale as the opening gamut of what has the potential to be a fine series.

Frustrating book 3 Feb 2010
By Srdjan Pesic - Published on Amazon.com

I am a great lover of British procedural novels. Their methodical, composed pace coupled with rich characters just work for me.
Unfortunately, this is not a case with this deeply frustrating book. We heard just about everything about DS Kate Power's private loss, her lenghty house redecorating, her mean, sexist co-workers, her potential beaus, and so much more, more than we can possibly give a damn about. The core of this lame mystery, the crimes and the hard subject of paedophilia get a passing mention, somewhere between new curtains and visits to an old aunt. Ms. Cutler in this book appears to be a budding romance novelist. Well good luck to her, I'll be running in the opposite direction.
