First off I have to say ignore the title - it almost put me off buying the book - I can only think it was the publishers idea (as the former more accurate albeit more prosaic title was 'The Four Pillars of Healing').

Leo Galland is a doctor practising in New York. His speciality is in returning to health those individuals who have spent months if not years being unsuccesfully referred around other doctors and/or trying out alternative medicine. The book is interspersed with case studies which are sufficiently impressive that if I ever find myself being referred from one doctor to another with no clear end in sight I'm off to New York.

After half (or more) a lifetime of medical practice and the creation of an 'integrated' approach to medicine Galland's basic proposition is that conventional medicine has become far too disease centred and too little patient-centred. He proves the case well.

Gallands approach is wholistic including complementary approaches where appropriate (especially nutrition/supplementation/leaky gut stuff/herbal remedies). However he is no intellectual slouch and states eg that most alternative healthcare does not stand up to scientific scrutiny. On the other hand alternative healthcare is praisworthy for being client-centred, and rooted in the concepts of balance, harmony and that if given a helping-hand the body will not only cure itself but stay healthy.

If you are interested in why medicine is 'too narrow', how to approach being healthy, how nutrition, disease and environment all interact - then buy this book. You will not be disappointed.

This book is the exactly the same as his previous book "The Four Pillars of Healing", just in paperback and with a new cover. You save a few bucks by getting this paperback edition.
