2007's 'Oi Oi Oi', debut album by German DJ/Producer
Alexander Ridha was all about high-voltage pandemonium.
Blistering, raw, confrontational and uncompromising in
its full-on, almost vulgar, sonic assault.
I liked it.
New album 'Power' seems to me to be a somewhat more considered
affair. The sound palette, rhythms and melodic ideas have developed
in variety, complexity and maturity. This is not to say that there
has been any significant diminution in energy.
Opening track 'Gax' displays a greater degree of amiability in its
trancey synth arpeggios than we have come to expect from this artist.
The fragmented speech intrusions at its heart are disconcertingly effective.
(Language, in this context, could indeed be a virus from outer-space).
'Starter', 'Sweet Light' and 'Rozz Box' all find Mr Ridha at his
edgily neurotic best. Twitchy, tooth-jarring big beats and loads of
prickly, crackling electricity. An intoxicating mixture.
'Nerve' pushes the boat out into less familiar territory.
A bubbly, watery, techo-pastoral landscape with virtual crickets
clicking in the grass. It possesses both humour and charm (rare
qualities in this, more-often-than-not, po-faced genre).
'Trooper' is a martial percussive nightmare. Dramatic but a tad morally
ambiguous for comfort - but perhaps that's the point of the piece (?)
'Drummer' is an absolute hoot. Pared-down to within an inch of
its life it sounds like an all-night party down at the frog pond!
'Heart Attack' is about as gentle as things get on this impressive release.
It's a really beautiful piece, shot through with warm, shimmering light.
The finest composition by far from this talented composer and hopefully
an indication of even richer rewards to come.
Highly Recommended.
