5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant scientific and emotional genius, 8 Oct 2006
By Anna (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This film is absolutely beautiful. It's highly intelligent, and hugely emotional. The story centres around Powder, a 17 year old boy with alabaster skin, red eyes and childlike innocence. He's also human electrolysis and evolved way beyond our comprehension.

The film is filled with angry people who vent their self-loathing and psychological malaise on Powder - but these people only serve to highlight the warmth and loveliness of three adults who take Powder under their wings, primarily Jeff Goldblum, who is a revelation.
An air of tragedy follows Powder around like a shadow, and Mary Steenburgen's character says it best with: "I don't know if there's a place in this world for someone as beautiful as you..."

There are scenes in Powder that will make you desperately sad, and you may question your own reactions to people, but it's an incredible film. In terms of emotional impact, and general plot-line (in a very round about sort of way), it's vaguely similar to The Green Mile. The final scene is so powerful, it straddles the line between uplifting and heart-breaking and it's hard to know which way to fall.

How much you get from this film really depends on how comfortable you are with psychological and emotional depth, but there's no denying its power and ability to provoke introspection and thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shockingly good!!, 3 Mar 2004
This film is all about a boy's struggle to fit into society after being a recluse for several years. The problem is that he has the unusual ability to conduct electricity due to a freak accident involving his pregnant mother shortly before his birth. A touching story that will draw you back time and again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hope has never been so important!, 15 Oct 2004
By Ni (England) - See all my reviews

This film is unforgettable! A masterpiece which is so powerful that there is no way someone can watch this film without being moved by the tremendous emotion lining the atmosphere throughout the whole movie. The story is a basic but truthful reflection of the state of current society. Jeremy Reed aka Powder is an albino, with telekinetic abilities and an unmatchable intelligence who is constantly penalized for his individuality. Disowned by his father at birth, tormented by the inconsiderate, prejudice teenagers he faces every day and mistreated by a racist, distasteful deputy, Powder is forced to suffer his new life in the town away from the solitude and security of his deceased grandparent's home in the country.
It is quite sickening to see how our society is today, to watch this innocent victim be torn apart by practically everyone he comes into contact with because he is different in appearance, however although it is saddening in this respect, the movie also sends out a message of hope through Powder as he shows how people can be; beautiful. He is nothing but beautiful, uncorrupted by society and untouched by the hatred of those around him, he remains a truly magnificent human being.
The film carries a very heavy atmosphere for the most part; however there are moments of pure happiness and an ending which demonstrates an unbelievably touching and beautiful take on the almost inevitable fate of such a tormented soul. Overall, I think this film really causes you to think, to realise and understand the ever increasing atrocious nature of human beings as it is a very powerful portrayal with a lot of truth surrounding it. This film will appeal to anyone who cares about the degradation of today's society and would soon open the eyes of those who don't.
The quote I can think of that pretty much sums up the story and the aim of this film;
"It has become appallingly clear that our technology has surpassed our humanity...maybe one day our humanity will surpass our technology!"
