Pow Bang - wow 22 Jan 2011
By sampiro
Format:MP3 Download
Pow Bang is an exciting album with tracks that are engaging and thought provoking. It is well worth taking the time over and it isn't easy listening but has a sort of punkish attitude. People who are used to folk, indie songwriters or traditional music probably will find this more accessible than most but I am sure that others who enjoy Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and similar songwriters will enjoy it too.
The album is honest and straight forward with no added tricks to weigh it down. "Raise Me" is a good example of this. The song is nicely lifted by the addition of backing vocals and minimal percussion. The intro leading into the song makes a nice statement about how simplicity can be a wonderful way to convey a lot.
The authenticity of the album makes Listen Lisse a far more powerful songwriter than the average ones you hear.

This review is spot on-
The most recent release is sitting in my hands right now! Recorded and released in 2009 this eleven track album is a piece of art that you have to hear. OK so not everyone is into acoustic stuff but this is far from the run of the mill acoustic material you've probably heard. There's plenty of punk attitude in Listen Lisse's music and that can be heard throughout this album. What's more Listen Lisse has a voice that really suits the style of music she plays and I reckon why this release is so damned cool. Favourite tracks for me include 'Raise Me', 'Burning Dust', 'On The Road', 'Vengeance' and 'Street Lights' though no doubt you'll find your own. This comes well packaged and production is spot on too! If you're after something different to what you usually hear then Listen Lisse has got to be up there amongst the gems that are worth seeking out. - Street Voice Magazine

NZ Musician review 24 Jun 2010

Often referred to as a one woman band, Listen Lisse specialises in
folksy electro-acoustic tunes that will leave a bitter sweet memory in
your head. Lisa McKendrick grew up in a small West
Coast town before moving to London, where she is still based, in '98.
She started performing live in 2004, first just playing guitar, and
later introducing percussion, playing a kick pedal and floor tom live...
`Pow Bang', was recorded in a home studio and co-produced by Lisa.
Clearly PJ Harvey influenced, the 11 tracks are simple and raw, with
no need for a great deal of instrument backing.
Songs such as Black and Gold Angels Dust and On
the Road have a mysterious and haunting vibe to them, while Raise Me
is brighter, with climbing guitars and interesting changes of tempo.
Capture sets out as another slow song, but breaks out into fast fuzzy
guitars to make it one of the standout tracks. Most are unpredictable,
and that perhaps, is what I like about this the most.
