5.0 out of 5 stars Crucial Reading For Social Scientists, 4 Mar 2006
By Capt I. McRae "The Ancient Mariner" (Angus, Scotland.) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
It is a long time since I have seen so much plain common sense in cold hard print, and Civitas, the Institute For The Study of Civil Society (see www.civitas.org.uk ), is to be congratulated on publishing this book.

It is increasingly plain to the majority of the people of Britain, of all colours and religions (who are more intelligent than the politicians think !), that multiculturalism is a failed experiment which is lying, like a harpooned whale, dead in the water. Political correctness and “positive discrimination”(which, call it what you will …. Is still discrimination !) have not brought us the tolerant Utopia the proponents of multiculturalism promised. Indeed, as is plain to all save those who will not see, multiculturalism has had an effect quite the reverse of what was hoped for. Inter-racial strife, not only between indigenous British people and those of other ethnic groups, but also between ethnic communities themselves, is dividing the nation, and religious intolerance is sowing the seeds of horrors to come. How have we come to this after such bright hopes ? An answer to this question is what Patrick West has sought to find with this book, and he has done so in masterly fashion. Brick by brick, he has built a tower of evidence which points the finger, fairly and squarely, at those who have brought us to our current predicament. The culprits are the ideologues of multiculturalism and the politically correct modern day “witch finders” who support them. West proves that, far from promoting integration and inclusion, multiculturalism as it is practiced in the United Kingdom (What West calls “hard multiculturalism), has done nothing except encourage separation and strife. West’s case states that hard multiculturalism has to be scrapped, and replaced with a “soft” multiculturalism which seeks to build a “one nation, one culture” ethos, instead of the multiplicity of cultures currently being promoted.

This book is, in my opinion, one of the most important works on social policy and social engineering to have been published in the last fifty years. If we heed its message it is not too late to reverse the trend and save Britain from a nightmare. As recent events show, unless we grasp the nettle now it may be too late, and Enoch Powell’s prophecies of “rivers of blood” may yet come to pass. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY !

Whatever your political perspective, buy this book ……. Buy several copies ! Give it to friends, and perhaps most importantly, send a copy to your Member of Parliament and ask for his comments on it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wake up call, 26 Sep 2008
By Mr. R. B. G. Harries (Oxford/ Nottingham UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A short book that gets straight to the point that our society cannot coexist with segregation, different law systems and different fundamental moral codes. Multiculturalism is counter-enlightenmnet, illiberal and can be racist, this book exposes one of the most widely misunderstood terms around today, as for when i say im against multiculturalism i get called racist due to people not understanding what actually is being said. Though one criticism of this book and the whole anti-multiculture brigade, they seem to think chrisitianity is important and blame secularism (which is a funadmentally universal notion) as the cause of moral reletavism, which it isnt, just listen to all the prominent secularists Harris, Hitchens, Dawkins, they all are universalists and condemn moral reletavism.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bigot's handbook, 2 Mar 2008
By Paul (Brixton, London) - See all my reviews
It is very important to remember that this book is not arguing against a multi-ethnic Britain. "The poverty of multiculturalism" is a phrase (and now a book) that is in danger of being hijacked by little-Englanders. What this book makes clear is that government policy on immigration, diversity and communities has sometimes discouraged successful integration of Britain's various peoples, including of British-born white and other British-born people with immigrant communities and eachother. With what ought to be the praiseworthy aim of "respecting diversity" our government has (inadvertently or advertently?) advanced separatism and mutual suspicion. This book argues for a Britain that, yes, does respect diversity of culture, race and faith, but that also does more to promote genuine understanding, equality and shared values between all.
