With her beautiful, heartfelt singing, excellent songs and effusive personality, Edwina Hayes was always one of the artists most likely to make it from the London acoustic scene in the early noughties. After playing frequently in London, around the UK and in Nashville, Edwina was eventually signed by Warner Brothers with whom she released her debut album Out On My Own in 2004. Although OOMO contains some excellent songs, the intimacy of the Edwina Hayes live experience was rather lost with the slick arrangements provided by a band of well-known session musicians.

Much truer to Edwina's live solo sound is her new second LP Pour Me A Drink which features just her guitar and vocals with the only other musicians present being Jake McKeague on acoustic lead on two songs and Carissa Broadwater on backing vocals on one. Pour Me A Drink is an excellent album with the sparse arrangements bringing Edwina's superb, moving singing and bright finger-picking guitar style to the fore. Also impressive are the strong melodies and structures to the songs, many featuring bridges in a style somewhere between folk and quality country music.

Edwina's main lyrical theme is love, often of the unrequited kind. Among the best songs of the heart on Pour Me A Drink are Season Of Love, Run and Leave A Light On For You. Moving on to other subject matter, the title track is another instantly memorable highpoint with its tale of a life of regrets.

All of the songs on PMAD are written or co-written by Edwina apart from covers of tunes by Richard Thompson (Waltzing's For Dreamers) and Randy Newman (Feels Like Home) as well as the traditional Froggie Went A Courting.

This female voucalist first came to my attention when I spent a evening watching acoustic folk singers at a amniesty usic evening in York. She was the last act on and completely blew me away with the quality of her voice, and quality of songs. After watching her live I brought the album, which really does not dissapoint. The songs "feels like home" and "pour me a drink", are two of my favourite songs on the album, but the rest are just as peaceful and exhilerating as these. Would highly recommend it!!

I went to see Roger McGuinn last night on the opening date of his new UK tour, and to my surprise and delight found Edwina opening up for him (and for the rest of the tour). I've seen her before, both solo and as part of Hummingbird, and last night she was in good voice, as always.

As has been said in the other reviews, the stripped-down performances on this CD are more representative of Edwina's stage act, and all the better for that. She really is starting to make her mark as a songwriter, as evidenced by 8 of the 11 tracks here. In particular, I enjoyed Leave A Light On For You, with which she opened last night, the title track (which is to be on Nanci Griffiths's new album), and Irish Waltz, which Edwina co-wrote with Jake McKeague, who plays guitar and Dobro on the track, though all her songs here shine.

Randy Newman's evocative Feels Like Home (to be found, sung by Bonnie Raitt, on his Faust album) is well-suited to Edwina's lovely voice, as is her wistful reading of Richard Thompson's Waltzing's For Dreamers. These two are always very well-received on Edwina's stage performances.

Yes, a treat of an album, and highly recommended. A new album is due out later this year.

I recently saw Edwina Hayes perform live where she was the support act. What a wonderful find. This album is brilliant and the tracks stay in your head for hours. What a great voice she has, reminiscent of the late Eva Cassidy. I love all of the tracks, possibly with the exception of 'Froggy goes a Courting' which is somehow misplaced. A 'must buy' album.

We saw Edwina at the Orkney Folk Festival. She was wonderful. This CD has some beautiful tracks on it. My husband & I never tire of it. Our friends are also very impressed and it has become a popular birthday present! You can't go wrong!!
