This is a beautiful, almost supernatural retelling of the Seymour family and their rise to power. Told from the viewpoint of their Romany cousin Cloverella (I'll be honest it took me a while to get used to her name!) who taps into her gypsy powers from time to time, she witnesses the three siblings get caught up in the whirlwind that is court life and the notorious Henry VIII.

The book begins with the four main characters as children, hiking across the Wiltshire countryside to find Merlin's tomb. When they discover the alleged tomb each makes a wish. Cloverella wishes for wisdom, Jane to defy her plainess by marrying a King, Thomas to marry the richest woman in the land, and Edward to one day own all the land they see before them. Over the course of the novel, it appears that all their wishes come true. Cloverella gains the power of foresight, Jane marries King Henry, Thomas goes on to marry Henry's wealthy widow Catherine Parr and Edward becomes Lord Protector of the Realm after Henry dies, being left as Jane's son's regent. But a strange curse seems to follow them about and balance out their triumphs with death and despair.

The novel is written in three parts and follows the story of each individual sibling with Cloverella remaining a constant throughout. It is beautifully written and the author certainly has a flare for description without going too over the top. Whilst it mostly follows the course of history, it is wonderfully entwined with the author's own creations and the original character Cloverella is a good original character. I also really enjoyed the supernatural spin on it, from Merlin seemingly granting the children's wishes to Cloverella trying to influence events with her gypsy powers. She will do anything she can to protect Jane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable read - Tudors fan READ IT! 27 July 2012
Format:Paperback
I found this book in a pile of my late mother's books (hundreds of them) and I was drawn to this one because my mother had written historical facts in the margin and also historical research, which all fit. However, the author has VERY cleverly drawn on history and entwined it with fiction and fictional characters, and when I say 'VERY cleverly, I certainly mean, VERY cleverly - this alone makes for a wonderful read as the book is seamless and entertaining, yet resounds history too.

I'm not a fiction fan but I really enjoyed this book, and I would hazard a guess you would too. Well worth the read.
