Format:Audio CD
From beginning to end this fantasic bargain CD presents some of Poulenc's greatest and most underrated work for small ensemble. The music demonstrates the vitality and wit so enjoyable in Poulenc's work alongside some of his most expressive and thoughtful compositions. The first half of the CD is made up entirely of music for two pianos (plus one for piano duet) - this includes one of my favourites, the Sonata for Two Pianos. These pieces cover Poulenc's extensive range and skill in writing both joyously and mournfully and also his talent for writing so adeptly and cleverly for the two instruments together.
Speaking of which, the combinations of instruments in the remaining sonatas on the CD are masterfully dealt with and, once more, Poulenc's wit frequently shines through. A particularly fine piece is the Sonata for Two Clarinets - humourous, clever and sharp.
A well-recommended, well-priced and well-presented disc featuring some of my favourite chamber music.

This is my favorite of the series if that's possible

Format:Audio CD
I discovered the music of Francis Poulenc quite by accident when I was a youngster when I heard his Model Animals on the radio. I bought an old Columbia Records recording of the composer playing and conducting some of the works on this CD. A good mixure of small group playing and duo piano compositions which I think I like the best. Thank you Naxos for giving us this great opportunity to enjoy these works which have been ignored by the big record companies for so many years. You can go wrong with this.
