Plunk that Poulenc 30 Sep 2011
By Donald Clarke - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Many years ago I had an LP of Poulenc's solo piano music by Grant Johannesen that made me laugh out loud, so clever and charming was the music, and I have looked for something as good ever since. Poulenc himself was a keen pianist; commentators often pull their punches about his piano music, perhaps preferring to praise his more high-class stuff; the booklet with this album describes the solo piano music as "variable in quality". But it is delightful, and more than that I do not ask. Poulenc didn't like mannerisms, and Eric Le Sage simply plays the music extremely well, letting it speak for itself: his generous set is unlikely to be bettered. It's already more than a dozen years old and deserves to be more widely available, but at least I could get it from Amazon.
