Sparkling Poulenc 21 Nov 2009
By Sentinel TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This, the first in a series of Poulenc's chamber music, is an excellently varied and charming collection. Instruments include some piquant oboe in sonata, trio and sextet, where the bassoon is also represented, as well as flute, clarinet and horn.
The sextet for piano and winds is a delightfully lively piece, endlessly inventive, while the trio and two sonatas have an engaging and more intimate, almost bittersweet character.
In short, this is great music-making throughout, and well worth investigating, as both the playing and recording is of a high standard. If some of this doesn't bring a smile to your face...

Time well spent 21 Jun 2011
Format:Audio CD
"Give the strings the rest of the day off - we're doing Poulenc".
Poulenc is a champion of woodwinds, and on this series of recordings of his chamber music he is heard to elicit perhaps a greater range of emotions from these instruments than just about any other composer. The clarinet especially, given Poulenc's love for this instrument can convey wistfulness, then abandoned frivolity, sometimes in successive phrases, switching from the melodic to atonal with puckish mischief. Oboe and flute are also prominent in these pieces along with Poulenc's distinctive piano phrasing.
Poulenc's chamber music is filled with the joy and peacefulness of a quiet sun filled room on a sping morning, but with the occasional chill in the breeze through the open window that prevents the music lapsing into sentimentality.
The playing is clear, the interpretations sympathetic and the sound quality is good. Any regular Radio 3 listener will recognise many of the pieces on here as they form a staple ingredient of the breakfast programme (the flute sonata was played in June 2011). Long may it continue.

Neat. Great Poulenc performance! 17 April 2000

Repertoire here are all woodwind chamber works. With the idiomatic harmony of French music, these music is very, very charming and under a moony and romantic atmosphere. The performance and recording are both excellent. As this cd showes, I must say that Poulenc is absolutly an underrated composer. His oeuvre(especially melodies and chamber works) should be more famous. And I can not but waiting for the next cd of this series.

Fresh and delightful 13 Mar 2001
By The Sanity Inspector - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
There's no need to cherry-pick--at six bucks a pop you can easily get all five of these Naxos releases of Poulenc's chamber music. You won't regret owning any of them. That said, this first disc in the series is the best. The music is light without being lightweight, melodious with a splash of early 20th century "modernism". And, at over an hour playing time, there is a lot of it. Pass the Pernod!
