'Hilarious... [the names] make you happy to belong to a people who believe it is their patriotic duty not to take themselves too seriously'

(Allison Pearson, Daily Mail )

Product Description

Russell Ash has trawled parish registers and censuses going back 900 years to compile the first ever complete book of breathtakingly unlikely-but-true British names. It features an incredible and diverse range of totally genuine names, evoking everything from body parts (Dick Brain), sex (Matilda Suckcock), illness (Barbaray Headache) and toilet functions (Peter Piddle) to food (Hazel Nutt), animals (Minty Badger) and places (Phila Delphia). Every single one has been checked for authenticity and its source is given, as well as extra notes where further fascinating illumination is possible. The book provides a rigorously researched yet laugh-out-loud overview of Britain's eccentricity through the ages. And in this fully revised, expanded and enhanced paperback edition, it is no exaggeration to say that it's Pottier, Fartier and Knobbier than ever before.

I challenge anybody not to laugh out loud at SOMETHING in this book. It's a bunch of lists of people's genuine names, divided into themes. Some of them are eye-wateringly rude, others just weird or make unintentional phrases. It's a book to read in small doses, to avoid overkill, and it the quality isn't maintained up to the end, which is why I "only" rate it 4*. Makes a great present for anyone who will laugh at things because they sound funny, with no further analysis needed. And it makes a fab toilet book!

My husband bought this book for his brother for Christmas and I looked at him like he was mad.

However, when the wrapping paper came off and BIL started reading it he had 5 people (aged from 27 to 57) in stitches - you know when you laugh so hard that you cry and you don't think you'll ever breath again? That's what this book will do.

It's completely inappropriate - and should really have an age warning on it - but it could be the funniest book you'll buy this century!

A real page-turner 30 Dec 2007
Format:Hardcover
Bought the book originally as a secret santa for a work colleague, but once I opened the book it has become a part of daily life with the youngest of our children being in fits everytime the book emerges. Have had to order our own copy (and censor it also!!). Highly enjoyable humour!!

Amusing
This is a fun book, and clearly well-researched. Some of the names offered would be strange in any era, some are only funny to modern ears for various reasons, some are just silly... Read more

Cringingly funny
A great book for Xmas - will have your guests rocking with laughter. Best kept away from the under 15s I would say as some content is a bit risque!.

An excellent book
Full of incredibly stupid names. I've given away a dozen books as presents and all the recipients think the same as I do: it's brilliant!
