Product Description

Synopsis
A step-by-step guide to the technique of pottery for both the beginner and the competent amateur craftsman. The book discusses clay preparation, wheel performance and the various forms that can be thrown on a wheel. It also covers techniques beyond the throwing: how to alter a thrown form; how to make edges, ridges, ribs and lids; throwing large-scale pieces; adding forms; and how to throw a series of small lumps from a single large lump of clay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Throwing - A Gentle Tuition, 26 Dec 2002
By Hugh Watson (Felpham, W. Sussex United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I have owned this book for many years, almost know it by heart, but still refer to it for special points.
John Colbeck combines superb practical ability with excellent teaching skills, and in this book he takes the reader through all the stages of throwing, and treats each aspect at a beginner's level through to the expert throwing of difficult pots. Each stage is illustrated with photographs - the book can be regarded as photographs with comments alongside - and all through you hear the author's voice talking gently to you, encouraging you, in his knowledge that all students find the practical aspects of throwing so difficult that at times the heart is near breaking.
Clay preparation - that essential - is treated in detail, as is the end of the process, turning, and the book is of great value for those two chapters, let alone the main section on throwing.
I write as one who bought the book as a student, and have used it since, including my 15 years as a professional thrower of eg garden pots, and, that particularly difficult item, the large bread crock.
Thank you, Mr. Colbeck.
