Having been a Potters Cough Remover user for several years I can highly recommend it to any "COUGHER" as its helped me no end - even in hospital my specialist was amazed the effect it had on my cough. It may contain a lot of ingredients you've never heard of - don't be put off - all seem to have their effect to your good.

I've dropped this back from previously five stars because they've recently changed the recipe (February 2014), so beware.

The ingredients Black Cohosh, Pleurisy Root and Scullcap have been taken out. These are all anti-spasmodics that explained why in the past it was so effective at killing a tickly cough stone dead. The new recipe is not nearly as good. It may be that these herbs can be risky to those with liver problems or expectant mothers, but the warnings on the previous labels were clear enough, and it seems a pity to deny a very effective cough remedy to those who are neither pregnant, nor have failing livers.

On the other hand, the methyl- and propyl- hydrobenzoates, which I would guess are preservatives, have also been taken out. These were introduced at the time the bottle went over to its present round, rather than the old medicine bottle shape, and upset a number of purists who felt that chemicals had not place in a natural herbal product.

The one ingredient that is new is natural strawberry flavouring, which I presume is not medicinal.

As with so many things, the original recipe was the best. The recipe up until last year also did the job well and better than any other cough medicine, but this current version, while tasting the same, is not nearly as effective.

It does annoy me when companies change their products on the sly, because they think customers won't notice the cheaper ingredients. I have written to Potter's, but if this was an intentional management decision, I do not expect any more than a bland PR assurance, if I am lucky.

After a heavy flu I was left with a wheezy chest, dry throat and serious cough. Having tried the usual mixtures (Benylin, Covonia and Buttercup) with no benefit, I eventually turned to Potter's Cough Remover.

The first dose eased my chest and coughing for 2 hours. The second dose got me through the night without serious coughing. After the third dose I was able to walk the 2 miles to work with only minor coughing (the day before I had coughed every step of the way). That evening, after my fourth dose, I was able to run 7km with only minor coughing (unbelievable!). After 48 hours (six doses) the wheezy chest was almost completely gone, and I could breathe freely. My throat is still rather dry, but the coughing is much less.

After 60 hours I was able to run 10km with a couple of minor coughing incidents. I was left with a raspy throat and some wheeziness and this remainder took another 3 days to shift - helped by the mixture and by a thyme gargle (one dessert spoon of thyme leaves in a cup; cover to 1/3 cup with boiling water; leave to cool; strain and gargle).

Definitely the most effective cough medicine I've tried.

Having tried a great many other so-called "cough remedies", I found that this one really works after just one dose. Agreed not so pleasant to the taste but if what you need is something that works, this is it. Especially good at night when troubled with catarrh in back of throat. Highly recommended.

I have been using this remedy for at least 10 last years and it really works. I always end up with a chest congestion after a cold or flu and none of the other over counter remedies help, so if I use this remedy I can usually avoid antibiotics. Last few years my children, who inherited my condition, also have been taking it successfully but it is not recommended for children under 6. It doesn't taste great but gives almost an immediate relief warming up chest and bronchs. I usually have to take it for a week or longer to get rid of the cough completely, I used to stop after a few day but then cough would return. It's so good I usually stock it up for winter.

This product used to be named Potters Vegetable Cough Remover, before the packaging changed and some questionable ingredients were added as preservatives, namely E218 Methyl Hydroxybenzoate and E216 Propyl Hydroxybenzoate which may cause problems with your breathing, so be careful. Having used this mixture for a few weeks it eventually came to light whe checking the ingredient list (these E numbers come conveniently under the main ingredients)so quite easy to miss

If you like natural foods or something which has not been messed around with, then certainly best to take something Vegan without any trace of potentially harmful side effects

An alternative could be Allens Pine and Honey Balsam from any chemist or online outlet
In conclusion, a shame that a traditional herbal remedy by a well known name has been spoilt.... Why do they do it ?

I had some of this in the cupboard and although had not used it myself, I was desperate for some relief from my raw bronchials. I had coughed and coughed all day yesterday and the night before and as an asthmatic, I was dreading ending up with a visit to the GP for antibiotics. This always then ends up being a long drawn out process of me being unwell for some time! I took one dose last night before bed, just wanting something to soothe and stop the incessant night coughing. I slept like a baby for about 4 hours but woke with a start and perspiring quite prolifically. (sweating it out perhaps?). I can honestly and truly say that it is not a coincidence that this has made my cough improve dramatically! I have had another dose this morning and will do what it says on the instructions which is 3 times a day and see what happens, so far so good! I have always been an avid fan of Buttercup Cough Syrup but I think this takes the lead on that. The taste is less than pleasant but it lasts only a couple of moments and is quickly forgotten about! My bronchials have lost that raw feeling and I have hardly coughed today. :-)
