Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

Follow that dream records, the collectors division of RCA have done it again with another superb re-packaging in their latest series of original album re-issues. Turning their attention to the often overlooked 1962 "Pot Luck" album. This Lp comprised of recordings Elvis made from 1961 and 1962, although oddly ommited the strongest material "Shes not you" and "I Met Her Today", all that is put right here however. The album was the last set of non-movie material for 4 years and followed on from the "Elvis is Back" "Something for Everybody" sets. It was weaker in its material however, and surprisingly the album featured "Steppin out of line" a catchy but out of place song left over from "Blue Hawaii". This song somewhat spoils the flow, not only in its inferior sound quality but in its style and pace. Mostly this album is slow to moderate tempo.

This 2 CD set gives you the original album re-mastered, the missing singles from the period, then a batch of first takes, CD 2 gives you all the remaining alternate takes. Beautiful packaging and detailed booklet help show the production process and how the songs came to be.

Remarkably many of the songs recorded here took less that 10 takes to complete and some of the 1st takes sound almost like the final masters. Elvis must have had a clear idea of how he wanted the music here to sound from the outset.

The only downside to buying this CD now is that if you have collected all of the follow that dream Elvis releases you will find very little new on here, most of the outtakes having been already issued on other FTD,s namely "Studio B" and "Long Lonely Highway". Plus many on the "Close Up" boxset. But at least these new CD's put them all together in one package.

Recommended purchase, so much more worthy than the "Tickle Me" release and some others. Keep it up FTD please!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice set for avid Elvis fans 18 Feb 2008

This is a solid album and was a top 4 hit on the US album chart in 1962 and went all the way to number 1 in the UK. It includes the top 5 US hit (another number 1 in the UK) "She's Not You". Several other songs would be released as singles later and become hits including: "Kiss Me Quick" peaked at 34 on the US pop chart in 1964, "Such An Easy Question" peaked at 11 on the US pop chart and 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1965, and "Suspicion" was a top 10 hit in the UK in 1976. The version of "I'm Yours" on this album is not the same as the one that was released as a single in 1965. In this version Elvis sings a dubbed "duet" with himself and does a spoken part at the break, which are missing from the hit single version. I like this version better. It has a couple of nice rockers (for 1962) on it "Gonna Get Back Home Somehow" and "Night Rider".

This release includes several bonus songs and alternate takes not included on the original. "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello" was released as the B-side of "She's Not You" and was a minor hit reaching 55 on the singles chart. "That's Someone You'll Never Forget" was released as a B-side in 1967 and cracked the chart at 92. Elvis' performance of the song is haunting and one of his most underrated!

While this album was a hit in 1962, it paled in comparison to his recently released soundtrack albums GI Blues and Blue Hawaii, which were HUGE hits. This convinced his management that soundtracks were the best way to make money and for the next several years movie soundtracks were the only new albums that would be released. Sadly the soundtracks seemed to decline in quality with each new release.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my top 5 favorite albums! 12 Oct 2009

When Elvis got out of the army, he made a bunch of great studio albums and soundtracks, he was at the top of his game while recording and it shows on this album! The sound quality is great, Elvis never goes off key or makes a mistake, he really studied these songs before coming to the stufio to record. It's hard to find a bad take of any of the songs, even the ones they didn't use are wonderful!
