Product Description

Product Description

The poster was a key medium in the Cold War, used to produce both fear and loyalty at home and abroad. "Posters of the Cold War" surveys poster design from the late 1940s when the 'Iron Curtain' was drawn across Europe to the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union in the early 1990s. Featuring over seventy designs by some of the leading artists and graphic designers of the period including Pablo Picasso, Grapus Design Collective and Peter Kennard, posters have been selected from twenty countries to demonstrate the wide international reach of the conflict.

About the Author

David Crowley teaches history at the Royal College of Art, London. He has published many articles and books on the history of graphic design and is a specialist on the culture of Eastern Europe in the twentieth century. He is the consultant curator of Cold War Modern, a major V&A exhibition.

By Robin Benson TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The seventy posters shown reflect the political times quite well because so many of them have an urgency that implies an amateurish production rather than the slick design techniques (and message) that posters for commercial products use. The posters, from fifteen countries, would win few design awards because they weren't designed for considered appraisal but to get an immediate message across quickly in situations where posters wouldn't necessarily be seen.

David Crowley writes introductions to the four chapters and the rest of the text are long captions to the posters, mostly one to a page. Despite so few posters in the book the coverage is wider than I expected. Posters for the `Ipcress File', Kubrick's `2001' and `Solaris' are included and a lovely spoof of `Gone with the wind' starring Ron Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

An interesting book but I really would have liked to have seen far more posters included, overall it seems a bit lightweight to me.

This book is very thorough and gives a great visual and textual insight into a period that has now passed into distant history. Excellent selection of posters.
