Fontaine have already released three other limited edition live tour only cds on their website "Whiskey Painkillers and Speed", "Losers Casino" and "Live at the Doug Fir" but this is the first that has been pressed up over on this side of the pond. It was recorded last year at the bands home town record launch party. Many of these tracks are far superior live to the studio version and put to bed any notion that they dont rock live. The band is on fire with "Lonnie", "The Gits", "Four Walls", "Dead Moon" and soar on "White Line Fever", "El Tiradito and "Contrails". "Lost in This World" and "Ruby and Lou" are two of the most beautiful songs Willy has written and sound great here. My only problem with it is the lack of audience banter, the band should have recorded them as well to add to the ambience. Most of the tracks from tbe bands last two albums mainly as well as their ep "$87..." It also has a hiddren track not listed here but I dont want to give that away

This is a limited edition so pick it up while you can, I still dont have a copy of their first live cd as those are going for £30-40+ now.

THE live RF album 7 Dec 2010
By Neppo
Format:Audio CD
I don't know how many times I've seen this band live. 5? 6? Yeah, at least.
But this album is THE live album and manages to capture the band where they are now. God knows I want to see them play again as soon as possible, but for now this will have to do. It does that. That is what this is for after all.
Get a beer, put it on, close your eyes. You can pretend. It'll do that okay. It'll get me through to the next time.

We Used to Think the Freeway Sounded Like a River has its cyclical moment where resolution seems to evade Vlautin and his assorted cast of characters in favour of repetition, but that's hardly the goal. What Richmond Fontaine (rounded out by Dave Harding, Sean Oldham, Paul Brainard and Dan Eccles) offer here are moments in time, as eloquently performed as they are lyrically detailed, which glimpse beyond the surface events without grasping for metaphysical purpose. How a band of this caliber - from Oregon, no less - remains more popular overseas than here in the West remains a mind-blowing mystery to me yet, make no mistake, this record belongs among the genre's upper echelon. A tragic, triumphant modern classic for dying, autumnal days.
