Wish I'd read the previous reviewer's comments more carefully - the religious homilies on each page are nauseating and annoying to the point where I'd struggle to work through a pattern without having to cut holes in the book.
The patterns are generally of the sort of "whacky items" you'd see on a catwalk from a "new designer trying to be avant-garde". If I found the smug notes on how my crochet would be better if only I let God into my life helpful, then perhaps I'd find something I'd want to make...

One star, because Amazon won't let me put zero.

This is the first crochet book I have purchased and I have been very pleased with the variety of sweater patterns. There are some rather archaic patterns as well /tacky jewels, hippy belts and an useless Fishnet Sweater), but overall the book has been superb. The patterns are relatively easy to follow, even for someone like me who is used to only making hats and scarves. I have never made a sweater until I found this book. The first sweater I made was the Circular Bolero. I followed the instructions and was able to finish it in a day. With the other two sweaters I modified the pattern some to my liking. I even was able to create my own design by the third sweater...which actually is the best one so far. It was enough to have the basic idea taken from the Angel Hair Bolero to create a cardigan-style sweater. I am preparing to make the sweater on the cover next. The only negative I have found so far is the pattern sizes run small, so I needed to go one size bigger. Each pattern has a description of the yarn used so it is easy to come up with a similar yarn if you don't have the one in the pattern. I highly recommend this book for even beginners. NOTE: USA book

2.0 out of 5 stars Elephant in the room ? 10 May 2008
By Ponytail VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I'm surprised no-one's mentioned why the book's called 'positively' crochet. It's because the author/designer likes to insert little uplighting tips on every other page, telling you how to live a God-fearing life. Just what you'd expect in a craft book, don't you think ?

Weird idea, the patterns are not very practical (although I like the very easy shrug, hence I gave an extra star) and not recommended.
